Rebounding from another bad relationship
She wanted a friend—just friends
I penciled down those words
We got to know each other and shared
A movie here, a dinner there, a kiss
Friends? Friends!
The label inked
Spirits refreshed in convivial company
Bodies grew hungry, as they are wont to do
An offer of friends with benefits
Chiseled in stone
Mutual attractions, mutual destructions
It was good—very good—before the jealousy
Demands out of line under the rules of friendship
Then came fighting under the rules of engagement
When did she start wanting something more?
Why wasn’t she honest with her feelings?
A friendship foundered on the reef
The stele sank beneath the waves...
Author notes
stele: noun: An upright stone or slab with an inscribed or sculptured surface, used as a monument or as a commemorative tablet in the face of a building.

Nay, I do not fill my pen
with moondust
and the green seas of my own mind
I dwell upon you
in the gentle rain
of your reality - you
deep buried in my skin
In one kind of fish
the male attaches himself to the female
with his saber sharp teeth,
eventually they share a common bloodstream.

interesting
See what happens when ,'rules of friendship' are flaunted
seriousely -it is bound to happen as simple and palin as ,'as they are wont to do'-
this is very well penned I really liked it -
This is a lovely piece and a great entry, thanks so much for posting it here

AIGH!
Sometimes, Jim, you really freak me out. This is exactly along the lines of something I'm going through right now (or rather, something I'm trying to avoid going through).
I love the picture, and the vivid imagery your poem creates. Beautifully written. I like how it shows the different stages of this relationship - friends, attraction, sexual contact, feelings developing and all hell breaking loose!
Great diction too! Thanks for sharing this one. I love it.
The question is: how does one avoid becoming friends with benefits? How does one avoid ruining male/female friendships when there's obviously an attraction?
