A Very Special Friend

There's someone special and a friend of mine
I know none better she's a friend of time
Not everyone has a friend like mine, I'm real lucky
Having one who's the best, who still calls me Ducky.

She loved the country so thats where we moved
I was very little but I still remember our house being rooved.
Across an oak tree shaded bridge that crossed a creek
Down a winding dirt road that later weasels would sneak.

Our house was at the end of a canyon and up a hill.
Going to town with my friend from there I remember still.
The city was in another world and town was a long long journey.
My friend said when my dad drove to work it was clear across the county.

I recall going to El Cajon which then was a city to many
I got lost there in a store called J.C.Penny
Guess they had everyone looking for me and my friend was mad
But only cause she missed me and when I was found she was really very glad

She had a praying Mantis who was her friend
she'd feed it lettuce on the window sill ledge
I'd either watch , play with trap door spiders or pretend
pretending I learned from her while holding myself up to the window sills edge.

My room I had with my brother Mike
It had bunk beds to sleep and dream all night
Sometimes I had night mares about the strangest thing
But my friend would always wake me with a lullaby she would sing

Every Sunday she would take me to church to learn about the Lord
She said it was a proper lesson that was good for us and my soul could afford
She had a garden beside the house where rabbits would dine
They were Easter bunnies that left eggs sometimes for us to find.

There never seemed a time I can remember when my friend wasn't there
No matter what she was the one that always gave me good care
She had a favorite place, a waterfall across the way
sometimes in winter we would sit and watch it all day.

My friend was always there for me even through all my tears
She was one of a kind for all those years
When times got tough or I needed her to rap
She'd always tell me, "chin up and pull up those boot straps."

The years went by and I grew up and she was my friend all along
She was a special person in my eyes who could do no wrong
Don't think there was anyone ever that was able to bring me such tender calm
Not like the way she could, not like my very special friend, not like Mom.

Beautiful tribute! Lovely memories. I hope you have shared this with her, if you are so very fortunate as to still have her here. I can relate to getting lost in JC Pennys! That was the biggest store in our town, too.

    And God Gave Mothers!

Well if there is one thing I am going to do tonight, before I call it a day...Is to commend a Mom like this Mom, always there, and had a heart like her sons, and made childhood fun....I have one still thank God, and she lives for us, just like my sweet brother here...And to write this story about her, proves She and he are both so dear! Commendable Masterpiece!...

    Wonerfully written

What a fabulous friend, for sure one of a life time so very rare!! There was no part I did not like,I loved it all very much. I love my friends!!! I felt passion, safe and warm! You have wonderful poetry. The title is perfect, The first line makes you want to read the poem. The last poem I guess I don't understand when I leave the body of the poem out and just read the first and last line. For sure the poem is perfect though and I don't think my poetry's first and last lines really match up with the body of the poem!!Great writing!!

While there is a juvenille (perhaps intentional) format to the rhyme scheme and language used in this piece, the content is certainly nothing but timeless. I say that the language is perhaps intentional because what better way to look at a mother then through the eyes of a small child? To be able to recant they way they would remember things, or the constant feeling of "looking up" (literally) to a person who engenders such respect and admiration is a real accomplishment. What I liked best about this piece was how unyielding it was in the basic premise. My fiancee is always saying that she likes small children the most because they have no real malice. Think this demonstrates that reality from the eyes of the other.

    Thank you for your entry.

    This is soooo sweet!!!!!!!

I love this and it permeates the love you have for your mother all the way through, along with excitemen and wonder she raised you up with. Sounds like you had the most wonderful childhood. I am envious of those types of childhoods, longed for one for so long myself...but to no avail.....but I still love and respect my mother and almost lost her to a heart attack last August. So I worte a poem for her called "Beautiful Betty" as her name is Betty and she loved it. Thanks for sharing this piece with the readers on A.P. it was very touching to my heart!!!~~Toni~~

    Dear David

This is simply the best! I've written about 64 poems and not a one about my Mom. But about 63 of them were for her!LOL
She would watch me doing this stuff, and later check them out. She often would give me the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval on many of them.

Glad I stopped by this evening before retiring.
    Be well.

This is awesome!!! first of all i love the rhyming.

now just let me say that you have done a very job well done! it is true our moms are the best friend that we could ever have that no matter what happened will always be there for us- from we're young and until we're grown.

    i love this part:
"The years went by and I grew up and she was my friend all along
She was a special person in my eyes who could do no wrong
Don't think there was anyone ever that was able to bring me such tender calm
Not like the way she could, not like my very special friend, not like Mom."

you made a very nice concept of how you feel about your mom.

your mom must be a very special person for being able to write something like this.

you're an awesome writing. Pen on!!!

Very... long, but that's OK. Many good poems are extremely long. The rhyme could've been a little more smooth, I think, but if you disagree, don't change it, the poem's fine the way it is. Good luck in this contest

This poem is filled with so many vibrant images and memories. I feel like I know your Mom, and I can picture the place you grew up in. The line lenghths are long, a couple of the rhymes are forced, but the imagery more than makes up for it. (Still, you might want to edit this poem down the road to make it a more outstanding piece.)
Love, love, love these 2 lines:

"She had a praying Mantis who was her friend
she'd feed it lettuce on the window sill ledge"

    What an image!

Oh my gosh! When I first started reading this...I wasn't sure where you were going at all..but my goodness! You're a beautiful and talented writer! Brought tears to my eyes. Such expression and imagery found within this poem. I'm not big on rhyming, but this was a truely amazing poem!

Thank you so much for entering!!

A couple things I will point out, though. When you refer to the Lord, with any name, Please make sure to captialize it! And I believe I saw a "Sunday" in there that wasn't capitialized either..! Thanks!
Fantastic job! I love it, and I really enjoyed reading it!!!
