directions

if I were to ask directions
cartographers would consign my map to the museum
the port master would have my ship impounded as unseaworthy
the doctor would have my ambitions relegated to the mad house
and the light I follow; dim, tenuous and uncertain
against descending skies
and surging seas
will sometimes disappear from your view
but only because I hold the flame close to my heart
cupped by both hands
tended by both eyes
steadied by both feet
it illuminates a map within me
and gives directions only I can see

"tended by both eyes" I like that. and the rest of it. You have a great style, it reads like it has ripened nicely. The sentiment is truly beautiful, this light that disappears to all the world because you hold it so close so it illumines you. Sorry I haven't written more, but I am so tired.

"cartographers would consign my map to the museum
the port master would have my ship impounded as unseaworthy" = roadmap in life???
  • well done

an interesting way to convey an outdated mode of thinking, i can appreciate such a view from personal experiences. nice flow, and there's a nice and subtle arhythmic rhythm there that sort of pulled me along, too... Nice imagery.
