Christmas
What images of Christmas Santa must see.
Thousands of rooftops, mantle, and tree.
Presents all wrapped, ribbon and bow
Flickering lights, sleeping children both a glow.
The good spirit of man generous to all.
The street's homeless plaintive of call.
Shoppers bustling, their packages at hand.
Large dinner parties yet to be planned.
The big night comes, excitement for many
Sadness for others lacking of penny.
Expectations are hardest now to meet
For Santa's reputation is tough to beat.
Poor Santa and Christ child, this season to share.
Perhaps seperate times, should we dare.
Prosperity and poorness, opposite in kind.
Must hand and hand lead us in mind.
Peace on earth, quiet around the fire
Is all we should ask in times so dire.
So Santa's fine sight this year to see
Should be lovers in arm, shared intimacy.
The gift of love, friends, and family
The renewed earth, the budding tree.
Santa passes this house by with a smile
Love of life has eased his burden another mile.

Such a wonderful poem, I agree with your sentiment that santa and the Christ child should share seperate days because at christmas, santa becomes the focus of our attention...and not the birth of Christ. If only we could hold the sentiment of love and good will towards others all year...thanks for the real meaning of christmas reminder! Great write! Merry Christmas

This is the first time I've heard of empathy for Santa! You nicely captured the contrast between the haves and the have-nots, without being maudlin about it. I love the idea of not asking for anything, just to ease Santa's burden. A nice read, for this Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas, John and family.

I love the comparison between Santa and Christ. Christ was poor and of meager means Santa has gifts for everyone. The gift Christ gives is love and Santa does run a close second because we know how much parents love their children. My heart also goes out to those children that have not love or a fortunate Christmas. Thank you for evoking so many feelings in me my friend.
God Bless you and Happy Holidays.
Much Love,
Renee

Excellent. Leave it to christmas to bring out all the sweetness and niceness in people. If only it was always there. I'm not talking about you, but people in general. They always seem to try and be nicer around this time of year. Always hoping to fulfil the vision of what christmas should be. THe vision which you so eloquently described here. Great stuff. A pleasure to read.

awe inspiring words of holiday cheer
This write really sent a relaxing vibe from it. The flow made it incredible to read, and it brought many wonderful images to see.
"The gift of love, friends, and family
The renewed earth, the budding tree.
Santa passes this house by with a smile
Love of life has eased his burden another mile."
The stanza above is a beautiful message to send to everyone. Wonderful job on a well written, enjoyable piece!
Have yourself a merry little christmas!

excellent...perfect timing
The beat meter and rhyme weren't perfect in this one...but the ideas, images, and feeling evoked certainly were. Admirable causes to which such things may be happily sacrificed. If this doesn't bring us into the meaning of the season, what may? Thanks so much for sharing this wonderfully evocative and thought provoking poem.

Yes, we should really think all of us how rich we are- everyone being online is rich- please do not forget it- however few money you have- for others you are a millionair!

This poem is full of sentiments both for the granduer side of life and the less fortunate side. You have captured the true essence of Christmas in this one line in particular, "the good spirit of man generous to all". The "good spirit" seems to reveal itself more at Christmas time than any other time of the year. Thank you for this poem. It is timeless.

I think we lose the spirit and the meaning of christmas because of the retail markets all scrambling to get out of the red for the year. You said it best in your last stanza:
The gift of love, friends, and family
The renewed earth, the budding tree.
Santa passes this house by with a smile
Love of life has eased his burden another mile.
That's what it's all about.
Love this one, the rhyme and the flow are nicely done.

Wow its like a christmas card...or one of those children's stories. Very settling and smoothly flowing.

i love christmas and winter in general. you have done an absolutely wonderful job here describing it. your wording is just gorgeous and this poem flows so nicely. thank you for sharing it with all of us. keep writing, you do a wonderful job!

I liked this poem- it's very well written, and it does flow together very well..
Christmas is my favourite holiday, so I had to read this poem, and you captured it very well. There is so much emphasis on Santa and giving lots of presents.. and even Christians sometimes forget the TRUE meaning of the season- to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.. which is awesome.. but I'm rambling.. I hope you keep up the great work!
Merry Christmas!

I saw this in featured earlier but didnt have time to read
it then...
Feels rather strange reading a poem about Xmas in August...
but the retail giants tend to start their massive campaigns
earlier and earlier every year...
Anyway...sorry to digress...I know I talk to much...
Enjoyed this , leaves you with a " warm " feeling almost...
though I am not religious...its always my favourite time of
year...it evoked a few memories...
Thanks

((oh and the title, Christmas is spelled wrong))

I dont really know what to say about this except that it is very well written. The flow was so perfect. I would pick a favorite line, but the entire thing fit together so well, it would be almost a crime to steal just one part and call it my own. So I will just say that I liked the entire thing. Good writing!
