Grandma you really should stop smoking
It can't be good for your health
You really should stop smoking
Soon you'll be beyond help
We used to say this to her
She smoked a pack a day
But she'd just keep on smoking
In her usual grandma way
Then one night while I was sleeping
I suddenly smelt that old smell
Her cigarettes were distinctive
They were near I could tell
I woke up almost instantly
And ran around the house
She wasnt there, or if she was
She was quiet as a mouse
So I went back to bed
Sure she was around
I couldnt understand the smell
Since Grandma could not be found
I slept through the night easily then
But when I awoke the next day
I found on my phone a message
"You're Grandma has passed away"
It can't be good for your health
You really should stop smoking
Soon you'll be beyond help
We used to say this to her
She smoked a pack a day
But she'd just keep on smoking
In her usual grandma way
Then one night while I was sleeping
I suddenly smelt that old smell
Her cigarettes were distinctive
They were near I could tell
I woke up almost instantly
And ran around the house
She wasnt there, or if she was
She was quiet as a mouse
So I went back to bed
Sure she was around
I couldnt understand the smell
Since Grandma could not be found
I slept through the night easily then
But when I awoke the next day
I found on my phone a message
"You're Grandma has passed away"
Author notes
This is obviously about the day/night my grandmother passed away, she used to smoke a pack a day and it eventually claimed her life. I woke up that night sure that I could smell her cigarettes, but as I lived 9 hours from where she did, I thought this was impossible. I later found out that she had died through the night/day.

sometimes things just happen that way, she probably wanted to see you before she left. losing family members is really hard. i know what it feels like to lose a grandma mine passed away last july.... the day after i got my license... i miss her but enough about me back to your poem.

To be pedantic, she didn't die until 11.42am. I remember being angry coz I was in class then but they could've rung me beforehand and I wouldn't have been. She went into hospital at about 2am though, so you're instincts still work. Nice piece.
