Target practice?

So,
Driver's ed gave me time to think,
and sleep, and sketch, and
build up lactic acid
as my thumbs whir around,
trying to send an unnoticed
text message.
but mostly, I thought

I thought about a poster-
something to do with tire pressure,
it said:
"Be tire smart,
play your part."
I didn't know what that meant
but i knew i was tired.
I caught myself chuckling
when the guy in the movie said,
"I'm tired of going to funerals."
It wasn't a funny statement,
just an odd coincidental
use of words
But alright, all right, I promise,
I won't run over little girls, but
hey, way to go and kill your brother-
seatbelts? probably a good idea.

And, speaking of "things i should have worn"
practically ever casualty so far wasn't
wearing theirs, but all the drunkards were;
Darwinian fitness and the party boy, one,
Poorly adapted sober kid, zero;
  I suppose alcohol is
  a catalyst for evolution.

Another coincidence: for every dead
male, there were three women-
I look at the girl in front of me,
and for her low alcohol tolerance and
accident prone driving, silently
blamed her for this class.

I played with the concept
of the influence of religion on
taking safe driving seriously-
How could you not scoff at
reckless drivers dieing, when you
know that Al-lah wills it?
or, why should a good kid
getting smashed bother you,
when they'll be momentarily reincarnated?

I realized that driver's ed was
obviously a Christian course,
and luckily we also know that
a road kill kid is nothing
a few 'hail mary's
can't take care of

Author notes

I spent all 8 hours of my driver's ed course taking cynical notes. Mostly, that was to suppress the cynical comments from being vocalized, but it was partly for this poem. enjoy!

    Well

Definitely cynical and mean spirited. But I guess boredom can bring out the worst in people huh.

    God Bless

    wow

this really touched me. My daughter (11 years old now) was hit by a pickup just one year ago this month. Drivers Ed has nothing on actually paying attention!

Strange poem...sorry , but I felt it un-feeling to others...the last lines were terrible...all drivers ed is , is to point out what can and could happen...keep all safe...I don't feel you have learned a thing..hmm, I wonder if you will pass...you will...I just hope that some growing up comes with it all...responsibilty is the word...sorry, but this poem was a bit bitter to me.
