I was walking through town
Just today
When I heard a voice
Gently say
Turn around dear child
And look to the street
Turn around dear child
And you will see me
So I turned my head
To the left
And what I saw
Stole my breath
A sweet little child
Stood very still
Her appearance making me
Feel rather chill
I was shocked to watch
All the people pass by
And not a one
Even turned an eye
Right there before them
As plain as could be
Should they not stop?
Yet no one could see
I had just bought some bread
And a small pear
I thought, Give me one reason
That I should not share!
So I worked up my courage
And started to walk
To the girl on the block
To see if she'd talk
I offered her bread
Which she ate hungrily
And when I asked
She told her story to me
She said, it's not very long
But most people don't bother
To hear me tell
Of my awful father
But if they would listen
They soon would find out
How he beats me so hard
Until I must shout
How he sends me out here
In sun and in rain
To open up my case
And sing of my pain
But not many stop
To drop in some cash
And if I bring nothing home
Then I deal with his wrath
Just yesterday though
I brought home plenty
But he was not happy
For it was no more than twenty
So he hit my back
He hit me so hard
That it started to bleed
Mother says it will scar
We have next to nothing
Because daddy won't work
He sends out us children
And we bring home our worth
But today no one paid me
And I can not go home
For he'll only beat me
I am better off alone
I will stand here and listen
To this song again
I will not go home
I will not go back to them
And as she finished her story
I started to cry
So many questions
But mostly just Why?
I gave her a hug
And I gave her the pear
I told her not to fear
Because for her I would care
I pointed to a trailer
Over off the road
Covered in junk
And I called it home
I took her case
And I took her hand
And together we walked
To the small piece of land
I took her inside
And she quietly cried
When I told her my story
And I told her why
Why I live all alone
In this small abode
And why this gross trailer
Is what I call home
I showed her the straw
Where I sleep at night
And I showed her the blanket
That wards off my fright
I showed her the crate
Where I eat my food
And she said it was lovely
Though small and crude
I offered her a seat
made of a pile of hay
And told her I won't mind
If she wants to stay
She gave me a hug
And said a big thank you
She said we would always
Be forever true
So that's how she got here
Her and her music
And here's where she'll stay
As long as she chooses
She will not go home
To her family
She will stay here
And Live with me
So if you see us outside
Playing by the stream
You'll know we're always together
Just her and me.
