Pitter Patter

Pitter patter,
Up above.
Sad sighs,
and crying inside.

Remembering everything...
The fun times we had.
All the sleepovers,
And all the parties.

Friends forever!
We often said.
I just never thought,
That this would be the end.

A regular day,
At a normal school.
Laughing and talking,
While sitting in class.

Then out of the blue,
A gunmen walks in.
Crazed with fury,
He shoots my friend dead.

Never realizing,
That my friend would die.
Not so soon!
Not like that.

That those couple minutes,
Would be the last time.
That I would see you on Earth...
I just never thought.

Pitter patter,
The rain falls down.
It will clear up soon,
But my heart will always be empty.

Author notes

I have been hearing about the shootings at Virginia Tech. This never actually happened to my friends... but I was thinking about how it must have felt for the students whose friends were shot. No one knew that it would happen, until it was over.

a very good poem, you address a very painful topic with great poetic ability, you have a lot of emotion in these words, a very accomplished poem. i can not even begin to imagine how terrible it must have been for those who lost someone loved at the shootings, and my heart goes out to them all.
i am sure they would be proud and hounoured by this piece, thank you very much for entering it, and best of luck

"Pitter Patter" puts a human face on the tragedy at Blacksburg last week.

The use of rain as a metaphor for tears is a good one. The whole poem's tone is appropriately somber, and evokes a strong sense of grief and loss.

    Very good poem!
