A mouse called Charlie came to dinner today,
as with each delivery of rotted food,
eating together and listening to distant tales,
stories told of a son and daughter and wife;
for each face’s memory is being replaced
by mud and water, pain and nightmares.
Time is lost within the struggle to survive,
hope lives but remains a secret grasp
reaching beyond the bamboo walls to places
only Charlie knows. Paths of imagination,
moments of escape become precious lifelines
cast out into freedom baiting sanity to remain.

Very gold worthy!
The comments below say it better than I do...as I sit here feeling the words settle in my solar plexis. The truth impacts hard, but its full effect on those who pass through the horrors of war, I can't begin to fathom.

A very deep and emotional poem for some I am sure. My father was a captive way back when and told similar stories to this. The background is very fitting and unique, I wonder though if it may also look good in grey scale, or septa, like an old photo of sorts… Just a thought
A nice job on both and congrats on the gold you’ve received on it. Thank you for the entry and best wishes in the contest
