She Was Anne

her name was Anne
and she wrote dreams
upon pages;
the kind that roam around your mind
but are always held deep
inside your chest;

and she heaved
under the weight of tears
left uncried
and so many truths
left unsung;

her name was Anne
not of Green Gables
but of Gestapos and Gettos;
not summer getaways
but of guards and gates;

she was Anne of raven hair
with faraway eyes,
on spindly legs
running towards
a woman's curves;

but the hook of her nose
told heritage tales,
that they numbered
with hate
upon her youthful arm;

yet she still dreamed
and wrote,
of longings and yearnings
of the future;
with simplistic thoughts
not comprehending
her reality;

her pen flew across pages,
filled with hope,
yet inked in sadness;
and the winds blew the sheets
upon the prejudice
that surrounded her;
without effect

she was Annie to parents
who saw only the past
of a little girl
with shiny new shoes
pink bows
and capped teeth;

the shoes went into piles,
bows flew upon the breeze
and the teeth
shone only in fillings
of melted gold
instead of smiles;

she was the promise
of a woman's secrets,
yet to be revealed
and enjoyed,
upon silken thighs;
with desired weight
pressing love
upon waiting lips;

she was humanity
destroyed by
inhumanity;
as the world watched
little girl tears
float away,
into subconsciousness,
where we didn't have to
feel them or hear
their weeping moans;

she was a star
from the family of David;
an outcast now
from society
that deemed her unworthy;
outlined by the yellow blaze
as the star
burnt itself out;

and she called to her God
without blame
for he was good and kind;
and man...
well man was man,
so unlike her God;

her name was Anne
and she pressed her face
upon the panes of our illusions;
breaking through the
shaded barriers
that we ourselves
had forged;

but too late for Anne
did we see the truths;
and now she remains
forever young
in our minds;
but dead to our
world;

and her pages
are all that speak;
her hushed whispers
grown finally loud;
we hear her voice
and feel at last
her tears,
as they slide down
those precious pages
to become

our own...

    Beautiful

    This poem was so beautiful it was like a painting, each word forming a grand masterpiece. I liked this poem so much, I'm not even going to write down my favorite part because there were too many of them. But stanza #5 was particularly heartfelt. Wonderful write and good luck in the contest!

    This is so beautiful. Anne frank is indeed America's hero. I cant believe how well you created the story of Anne Frank, the beauty in that little Jewish girl, that died terribly too long before her time.

    her name was Anne
    not of Green Gables
    but of Gestapos and Gettos;
    not summer getaways
    but of guards and gates;

    Heres to Anne Frank, a national heroin that lives on even in death.

    Good Luck!!!

    I really like this piece. I have read the diary of Anne Frank and I love learning more and more about her. It was a very sad thing that happened, but she did say she wanted to go on living after her death, in that she accomplished. I never would have thought to writew a poem about her, you did a great job.

    Such

    power and sadness in your words and how could there not be. This piece sent chills down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. In a strange way I also found it inspiring for if people had to go through this horror how bad can anything I face truly be. This is an amazing work of art. Great job bun.

    Oh my gosh!
    Mommy, this is so beautiful, I don't even know what to write about the poem itself! You told the story in such a unique way...

    A thought that's been on my mind for long... What would happen if Hitler had been born half a century later and had power in Germany right now...? Scary... I guess I would have ended up in one of those camps as I am not a so-called "Aryan"... It makes me feel terrible that there are still quite a lot of (Neo) Nazis in Germany today...
    Sorry for this, I will stop now...

    Never ever stop writing!
    Lots of love,
    Annie

    Excellent

    From time to time throughout human history, God has lit a flickering candle to offer up hope for the ultimate victory of light over darkness. Anne Frank was a small but brilliant flame, that for a short while, pierced one of our darkest nights in our collective history. Well done.

    I am a bit perplexed what this has to do with Lenny Cohen - but it is quite touchingly written none the less. One point: the gulag reference is irrelevant.

    Wow. I loved this. The way to told everything to us was without strong imagery, yet still painted pictures of her "soul" into our mind ... which is very skillful. Love how you seem to devote your words to a certain grammatical term ";" and balance everything on that ... making it descriptive original.. Brilliant work, best luck in the contest!! && your right - I did enjoy it!

    I don't know what to say, this just was so vivid and such a tribute to Anne and a reminder of the horrors of her times, here we have one loving soul amidst all that hatred and 'inhumanity' as you wrote of. It is a reminder, lest we ever forget. Never Forget has been spoken often, but I wonder if our younger people know of this worst of times. Perhaps through Anne Frank, some of them do/will. Profoundly showing the Good vs. Evil within the more than horrible times Anne saw, what can one say?
    Thank you for reminding us, bless you for writing this with such passion and care to remind us. 'Her Name was Anne' and she means so much. All the best to you,
    michele

    A wonderful and very moving tribute to Anne Frank. I've had the opportunity to visit the house where her family stayed in Amsterdam. Prejudice is such a killer, yet here you've made her come alive again through your words. The last stanza is amazing. Beautiful poetry.

    I encountered the most virulent anti-semite I've ever met today. When I told him the reason the Auschewitz rail-line wasn't bombed was because a bunch of ultra-right-wing generals weren't about to lose a couple dozen of their beautiful Protestant boys in blue over a couple tens of thousands of dirty jews- he told me to shut my filthy mouth. I've been walking around with a pit in my throat until the moment I read this poem.

    This tribute, heartfelt, sensitive, simple, wrenching- was the best possible remedy for me. I feel absolutely fortified knowing that in this world there is senstivity and sorrow, and that something so long ago can still be encapsulated and immortalized in words so stirring. Thank you so very much.

    Beautiful

    I love the way you have incorporated reality and the untimate truth in with her and her own reality, both physically and emotionally. That shows your talent as not only a great poet but as a master with words to create imagery and emotion. All poets really are is players of words when it comes down to it. Fantastic my friend. ~Peace~Gar

    and you knew that I had something to heal inside me right now, and that, through your poem, the tears would finally be set free ...
    you know how to take care of people's hearts, my friend, and I thank you so mcuh for your gift ...

    Such a profound write, full of emotion. You have captured Anne Frank with such beauty, whilst writing the horror life she was subjected to. Such sadness overcomes me when I think after all she went through for so many years, she wasn't able to live free again.
    'she was a star
    from the family of David;
    an outcast now
    from society
    that deemed her unworthy;
    outlined by the yellow blaze
    as the star
    burnt itself out;'
    Such powerful words here that encompass the hate that surrounded these people, yet your words have put her on history's pedestal so well.
    All the best with this amazing write.

    Wow. I really enjoyed this. It takes great skill to fully capture a time in history such as this. The emotion and tone was very powerful, perfectly fitting Anne's sturggle. The metaphors were amazing...especially about the star of the family of David. Brilliant and truly inspired. There were some line breaks that struck me as harsh, but it seemed to have a purpose, but I'm not sure. Great imagery and allusion presented here. And the form/flow seemed so simple, but in a good way that I can't quite pinpoint. It seemed to reflect the innocence of this highly influential girl. You did a masterful job of depicting her and this tragic story. For this not only affected her, but millions of others...and you demonstrated that well, too! Lovely work. =)
