Ode to the American Soldier

Missing image

“Legions of warriors strong and bold,
Beating sword to shield as in days of old
With frenzied cries and faces gaunt,
They confront the enemy with chanting taunts,
Ever vigilant, faithful to the end,
Our nation and freedom
They have pledged to defend.”

Knowing only that Tyranny
Had once again reared its head,
They knew they had an opponent to quell,
Therefore they prepared to go to war
And give their enemy hell!

Campaigns such as these more often than not
Require a payment of great price,
But they were eager to do battle
And draw their enemy’s blood,
By any warring device.

Some would say that war is senseless
And that it has no reasonable excuse,
But I beg to differ, just look at history
And the many instances of tyrannical abuse.

So long, as a just fiber exists in a Patriot
And the victims cry they hear,
Our brave men and women will answer the call
And into the hearts of the foe they'll strike fear!

Author notes

This is my tribute to all American military personnel currently serving and who have previously served. I myself served 15 years in the army until I was medically discharged. Even now, I still serve my nation as a Federal Police Officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Uncommon courage, strength and resolve; these are the traits of an American soldier.”

Wow! 15 years of service. First of all, thank you for your willing time and service. You are more than appreciated! I also thank you for your poem in this contest. You wrote it in the unique way, only a true soldier can write about war, and what it is really like. This gives me hope. This helps me to understand those close to me,(such as my brother, who is pictured above, and my uncle, who served a long career in the Army, before he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer W-5. Not to mention other service men in my family who served in other branches, all of whom I am proud of.)

You have penned a powerful piece not only on the soldier, on patriotism itself. I think that the soldiers will love to hear from you in this. You speak boldly and proudly of the American Heritage. I also think this goes for patriots everywhere who fight to keep their countries free as well. Thank you for entering and best wishes in the contest. Love and God bless, Joyce

It's a sad fact of life that we have to have soldiers and armies at all but you're right in so much as history has proved there are too many tirants willing to invade and dominate at their will. The world would be a much nicer place if mankind could put his greed aside and live in peace with his neighbours.

The images of battling soldiers in days gone shows very clearly how long the stuggles of mankind hads gone on, and even before that really. War poetry isn't my normal topic to read but I think you've written an exceelnet piece here. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks matt, I do take my beliefs very serious, and I do think that Patriotism and Christianity are closely related.
Looking forward to read your next write/poem etc.
