Buckskin smoldering on stacked stick fire,
moon blessing words whispered like soft wind,
a circle of women, seeking knowing
of Peace upon a trail of sobs
that sisters have known since first woman,
slipping through a hole in the sky
and was bereft of her father’s hand to hold
until she saw his word and work
in lake and grass, and branch and bird
beneath Jack pines leaning into a bowl
of sky wrapped over a sacred smoke
and leather face and bright-bead eye
of a grandmother who knows how trees talk
and leave their stories hanging in the air
for birds to glean and pass along,
in sweet soul song and wing’s baton
a soft and steady voice not heard
unless your spirit’s focused on
a different smoky spiral up and down
a close of lid to see an orb come dancing
below bent willow frame and hide
a blue reminder of creator’s eye
to see within the very heart, a small holiness
that evolves from knowing when to edge
towards a fire lit face and know
a change in voice, a spirit new,
has yet another tale to tell
to crawl beneath back-touching goodbye
and greeting night and new noises in the air
a sip of tea of mint and sage,
a bucket of berry soup to sip,
and a bag of stories to carry home
to hold and nurture until another telling
when morning birds bring home
a fluttered faith to weave in nests
a strand of hair from daughter’s head.
