Why do I get so upset and so stressed
About these ridiculously stupid tests
That eat me up and get under my skin
As I try in vain to learn everything
They try to trap my imagination
Stripping from it all creation
Taking away what is rightfully mine
With questions that I know won’t help me in life
Why so much pressure on these pointless exams
Something that I just don’t understand
Wasting my time and my energy
For 4 simple letters: G. C. S. E.
Next year it’s A – Levels, after: University
Then working to try to make sufficient money
To stay out of worry, out of debt, so you can
Live out the life you always had planned
But the trials get harder each and every time
Constantly trying to catch up to deadlines
Why does it have to be this way?
Dog – eat – dog, come what may
You can never relax; always have to be on top
No-one’s content with the life they have got
Having to work harder, having less fun
Raising the bar for everyone
I just want to enjoy life, realise my dreams
Not have to conform to reality
The way that we live, it seems such a waste
Throwing everything away – such a disgrace
And now this is all I’ve got to look forward to
Such a demanding life we have to live through
Where we cannot show flare or individuality
And it all starts here, with GCSE
Cause as we grow up they clip our wings
And clasp at our throats so we cannot sing
Infinite potential extinguished, like that
Bred to be the same, just another one in their pack
The future fills me with such uncertainty
What’s going to happen to you and to me
Should I bother worrying, should I bother to care?
When in the end all I want is you to be there…
Can I make a difference, can I change a single thing?
Should I just give in, knuckle down and start revising
I can only try my best, don’t have to work hard
For what in essence is just a letter and a star

Author notes
Got GCSEs coming up very shortly and I'm getting quite stressed about them (which is probably quite evident)

Great Work!
I really enjoyed reading this, though yes it was long. I liked the simple voice and the little metaphors to. You made this true to yourself and not too dressed up which really made it fun to read. Great job and thanks for your thoughts!! -

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it

Great write on a topic that's not really all that great...
We're doing something similar half a year from now and I'm already scared to death...
Thanks for sharing, great to know I'm not alone.
Keep on writing!

Great Stuff
A really thought-provoking piece that reminds me of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' in terms of stifling institutions and their required conformity. Best of luck in the contest with this really excellent poem.

Ahh that is a great song. Not much of a fan of Pink Floyd apart from a few songs, including that and Money *dum dum du-dum, dum dum du-dum*. Thanks for your comment

The first few verses just make you smile, then as the poem goes on you really start to think about what the writer is saying.
Excellent, I really like this poem! A poetic way of expressing the hatred of exams.
Thanks for entering!

Well, I have no frickin idea what GCSE's are, but I DO know what exams are. Lol. And I must say, this is probably the most poetic thing I've ever read expressing hatred of exams. It's extremely fun to read and lovely. The only problem is...I can't really say any of this isn't true. Life can be depressing sometimes. But I'm pretty sure things get better. So hang in there!
