No Rhyme or Reason

There is no rhyme or reason for poetry –
Why should anyone care?
There're lots of things to buy,
And there's a cellphone ringing somewhere.

There's a cellphone ringing somewhere,
And if I really cared,
I'd answer the silly thing
And find the answer there.

I'd find the answer there, I'm sure,
There's no cause for despair,
I'm sure there's someone on the line –
But what is that buzzing there?

Author notes

Only two glasses of inspirational "Fat Bastard" chardonnay.

Thanks for the commentary. It's hard to say what was in my mind at the time I was composing this poem, but I certainly didn't need another beer!

  • You obviously needed a beer on April 20 last. I was intrigued by what is buzzing at the end, deeper perhaps than the obvious - your muses having a nag at you perhaps.

i like this. it's tells the truth to the modern day b.s. that has taken the people by storm. i think it's great but, the title doesn't really go with the poem. 'No Rhyme or Reason' makes me think that there is something else that you want to say. i like it tho and it's really good. thanks for sharing and i'm glad i got to read this.

      Thanks and Apologies

      Norea-

Thanks for the applause. I clearly do not pay enough attention to the fact that people actually reply to what I post. I do spend most of my time at Oldpoetry.

I love the tome is this piece and the irony of the how the worls is so busy that the buzzing of the ring tone calls from the cell phone itself. We can keep the outside world at bay, just give us a day as poets we say! ~Sie

    Thank you for your entry.
I found this an amusing poem but after the opening lines I had difficulty in relating it to the competition.
It is obviously your opinion of poetry despite the fact that it is in itself a poem and therefore, according to you, it has no rhyme or reason yet it has reason and does rhyme. I love the contradiction.
What a pity it does not actually fit the competition.

    2. literary work in metrical form; verse.
    3. prose with poetic qualities.
    4. poetic qualities however manifested: the poetry of simple acts and things.
    5. poetic spirit or feeling: The pianist played the prelude with poetry.
    6. something suggestive of or likened to poetry: the pure poetry of a beautiful view on a clear day.

Thanks for sharing! I'm feeling better about poetry this morning, but there's this dry feeling in the back of my throat.
