You knew that you would die this day
And yet you still stood in the way
Blood in your breath
There's no strength left
You saved your fellow man from death
A human shield, you sacrificed
the winter blossom of your life
Fire in your eyes
You've no goodbyes
Your final memory is their cries
Your father saw the holocaust
and in those camps, you too were lost
in hatred's grasp
until at last
those fear filled yesterdays had passed
Your name means "Lily"
Flower of peace
Your floating soul
is now released
And yet you still stood in the way
Blood in your breath
There's no strength left
You saved your fellow man from death
A human shield, you sacrificed
the winter blossom of your life
Fire in your eyes
You've no goodbyes
Your final memory is their cries
Your father saw the holocaust
and in those camps, you too were lost
in hatred's grasp
until at last
those fear filled yesterdays had passed
Your name means "Lily"
Flower of peace
Your floating soul
is now released

It was recommended by someone I check out this poem. It brought tears to my eyes. His sacrifice is well remembered, and now, annotated. Well done.

This is a true story?
I'm amazed that I've heard nothing about it at all. He certainly must have been a remarkable person.
Congrats on taking the time to write this to bring it to the attention of others.

Tribute
I really like this.
A fitting tribute,
To a man who gave his life,
In protection to his students.
Their could've been no better professor.
He taught the greatest lesson that day.
One that only soldiers learn.
To protect what you believe in,
No matter the cost.
Well done.

Ahh, this poem is absolutely beautiful & a fitting homage to this wonderful man who risked his life for his students. I thought it was so sweet yet beautiful & serene. I love the ending. Definitely worthy of your trophies. I especially liked, "
Your name means "Lily"
Flower of peace
Your floating soul
is now released
"
Good job -
I'm glad you picked up on this overseas. I oughta write a companion piece regarding the bag of dirt that shot him, but it wouldn't be suitable reading even for prison inmates. I'm not sure there are even words contemptible enough to do it justice. Nah, I'll just bask in the beautiful tribute that you've penned for this heroic professor and let the belligerent homicidal imbecile fade into a despised obscurity.

I can't say anything that has not been said by someone else so far. There are few true heroes left in this world and it is so refreshing to see that someone remembers and eternalizes his life and his selfless death with such beautiful words as this. You truly showed your admiration and respect,
reenie

Oh my gosh! This is an absolutely splendid trubite to a wise, wonderful and powefully humble human being, who selflessly gave all that he had (his life!) to protect those students from that crazed gunman.
I love this work, how thoughtful and kind of you to write this about him and I hope he rests in peace.
He is truly worthy of this honor. -
The poet has written a tribute with finesse, the rhyme scheme is uncompromized and the presentation perfect.Especially liked the phraseology of "you sacrificed the winter blossom of your life"A beautifully penned tribute for a man with a beautiful spirit.

Another wasted life thanks to American lack of gun control. How ironic that someone who survived so much should fall victim to random violence engendered by a more violent and lawless society than either Hitler's Germany or Ceaucescu's Romania.
-
Thank you for this wonderful tribute to a man who face down pure evil twice in his lifetime. Very well penned!

-
Beautiful tribute
This is very touching. It is every teacher's heart to give their best to each of their students. This gentle soul gave them his ultimate best.

I hadn't heard about this heroic man before, unsung hero of that terrible day. You've written so eloquently of him, your words paying solemn tribute.
We're put upon this earth for reasons, one of his was to be here for that young person, to protect with his life so that person could go on with theirs.
In his picture he looks so understanding, caring, his eyes reflecting what you've written in your poem.
It's beautiful and I wish you the best in the contest

A very touching tribute and dedication to true hero who restored our belief in the inherent goodness of the selfless 'human' spirit when faced with an act of inhuman, cold and robotic barbarity.

-
I only hope the selfless act this man has shown us all is something that is long remembered. He gave his all for his students... he gave his life. Wonderful tribute!

A heart-warming tribute...
You scripted an endearing memorial for this true martyr. He paid the ultimate price to save many lives. In times of great anguish, these heroes give of themselves without hesitation. This MAN represents the good that man can accomplish. Your lyrics are infused with a caring spirit and your love. Fabulous work of art, Stephanie.
