there is a tree somewhere--
a backyard, a forest--
gnarled and proud and old.
this tree is eating a rock
a small rock and well worn
too.
someday,i suppose,
when he is very old--
older than today
and taller than now
the tree will finish
his meal-
the little stone
worn by the elements,
and now absorbed in ligneus parts.
the very old tree
satisfied by his stoney meal.
will sway its branches somewhere--
a backyard, a forest.
he will sway his branches and be satisfied.
someday, i suppose,
this tree will die--
eaten by the hungry earth.
but what of the little rock?
