Humanity

Where are you humanity,and where are your fruits,
Have you laid them down beneath the ground along with your roots.
Did you fade away like the light the day as it embraced the dark of night,
Did fear of failure force you to run,force you to keep out of sight.
Have you hid your face amongst the sea of faces imprisoned in their web of untruth,
Have you covered your ears to drown out the sounds the desperate cries of our dying youth?

Has you voice been silenced like the silent cries of the unborn child who's life will never be,
Has AIDS eaten away at your values as it has eaten away at our society?
Have you been taken by takers who take or raped by rapists who rape,
Were you destroyed by the destroyers who destroy or were you able to make you escape?
Can you hear us where you are, in this place where you hide,
How can it be that you are not touched by all the tears that are cried?

You left us in a world driven by power,lust and greed,
Abandoned us to a society that chooses to ignore our every need,
We're torn by our differences,fighting in wars instead of fighting for peace,
And just because we're not the same we choose to become mortal enemies.
We kill and call it justice because the law is flawed,
Yet when the guilty's found not guilty we stand up and applaud.
We've surrendered to rapists and pedophiles,
Traded our beliefs for society's blinding lies.
We murder,plunder,break,destroy,
Stealing the innocence of every girl and boy.
We are being wiped out one by one by violence and disease,
Our own thoughtless actions are bringing us to our knees.
We make our own decisions yet it's God we choose to blame
WE choose to be ignorant,we should all be ashamed.

In this,my own shame,I continuously search for my own humanity,
Because in order for this world to change I know the change has to start in me.

Author notes

Regardless of what you feel about this piece,in my heart i know that it is far from finished and the truth is that i dont know if it will ever be finished.To me it will probably always be a work in progress.

    Great Write

    This was a wonderful write. Very heartfelt about one's own search for humanity. The world is a sad sad place anymore. I think the time is near when God shall return and make it beautiful once more. Thanks for sharing. Take care. Sandy

    I truley believe this is one of the most sophisticated and well written poems I've seen in this contest. The diction you use, the metaphors, everything is just really well put together, and gets the point across really well. The only tihng is, it doesn't necesarily mention teenagers and their specific problems, which was a focus I was hoping for but I guess I didn't make that very clear, which is my fault. But either way this is a great poem. Thank you for entering and best of luck to you.

    If you write more that is great but I really like the lines above I think that is a strong closeing and the poem it self was in a Def Poetry from the heart knock your sox off. I like the message and Thhank you for entering good luck
