Share the Hate

They smack him, berate him, they "spit on his face",
they strip him of dignity, conscience, and grace.
They hate him, they hurt him, and when they are done,
he chooses to strike back, vest-adorned, loaded gun.

The classes are normal, students talk, flirt and chat,
the day is mundane, even boring, but just like that,
their whole lives were about to change,
as a kid with a gun shot everyone in range.

"You caused me to do this," he says with a sneer,
as if only he understood pain and fear.
If only the students knew what await...
one kid with a gun chose to share the hate...

He struck out against "debauchary", they're "hedonistic needs."
How only one person can sew hate's dark seeds!
"Do you know what it's like?" he cries to them all;
his madness ends as he storms Norris Hall.

Are you satisfied now? Do you feel better yet?
Is life really a game of Russian Roulette?
Do we fight hate with hate? Will that end our pain?
Alas! How we flatter ourselves! How are we so vain!

We like to pretend only we understand;
that somehow it's our right, we can make our demands.
But hate against hate is a futile war;
if only we'd end it, just stop it. No more.

That our children should suffer-- that is the crime!
Hate is the culprit time after time!
Every time our innocents die,
we scream out the question through our tears-- WHY???

Author notes

So I saw Cho Seung-Hui's "manifesto" video, all of his self-righteous hypocrisy clearly visible, and I just had to write this. I needed to write something. Yeah it's rough but I really don't give a. I just had to write something, so I did.

Please tell me what you think

    WOW

    I'm struck speechless. For devos at school this morning we each came in to a candle on our desk and two small papers stapled together, one with a picture and one with info on the person, like what they were going to do in life, etc, and we went around praying for the families of the people on our desks.... it was truly saddening, and had I seen this earlier I would have gotten your permission to read it to them.... anyway, we sang this is your time by Michael W. Smith..... anyways, it was cool, and your poem is just WONDERFUL.

    Wow. Dan, this is just... whoa. I watched footage from it from the moment it first come onto the news, and we had it on the entire time. I was just struck by the enormity of the violence. But this is a great poem, and a great tribute. Hate is the culprit, you're right.
