The delights of Australia
I live in Sydney town in good old OZ
where folks who come from every nation live
and friends all meet to have some fun because
our life is good and has so much to give.
I grew up with my Mum and Dad and Bro.
on streets once safe from harm to walk at night.
I’d meet with friends in town to see a show;
we loved to see the city lights so bright.
In Sydney town are many sights to see.
Our harbour’s best in all the world today;
the Opera House, unique, stands near the quay
where you’ll see concerts, drama, show or play.
We’d go to Luna park, the zoo sometimes,
and ride the ferry back and forth each day.
The Harbour Bridge we walked from time to time;
“Coathanger” has the longest span, they say.
Sometimes we drove out west to see the sights:
Katoomba where, nearby, Three Sisters stand
so proud. We’d wonder at the awesome might
of rocks that rise so high above the land.
And then we’d go to see the museum there
where giants they found who lived here long before.
We found so many artifacts, I swear,
they made us want to wander and explore.
Last year I went down south to live in Melbourne
a place known as Geelong was where we stayed
I lived with Pete right there where he was born
and travelled round to see the sights displayed.
We viewed the Twelve Apostles one fine day.
The long Great Ocean road, where they stand tall,
extends along the coast and paves the way
for other wonders round the coast that sprawl.
I love this land called OZ where I was born
from north to south as well as east to west.
I never tire to watch the sun at dawn
or see our native wild life at its best.
I’m back in Sydney now, where I belong
and planning trips to see more of the sights
Why don’t you fly on over? Come along!
Enjoy the fun for endless days and nights!

Author notes
True fact: I have seen slides and artifacts showing that billions of years ago giants walked the earth, giant seats carved out of rocks through the Blue Mountains, rocks for hundreds of miles seen from the air placed in certain patterns as if to guide space ships in..it's amazing. Hmmmm I think Aliens have been here.

Excellent writing
I really enjoyed reading this extremely well written poem and learning about things in Sydney and Melbourne.

WOWSERS! How big are those giants? The twelve Apostles! I hope you folks get some serious rain one of these days! I remember "The Seekers" a singing group from Australia, and their album "The Seekers seen in Green." What a beautiful album with wonderful sounds! You remind me of the girl singer in that marvelous trio! You are pretty! Tell your Ma "Happy Mothersday"! Luv ya, Where's there's love and there's thunder!

Thank you Wesley for your great comment, we sure need plenty of rain. And thank you for compliment.

I love learning about different places on Earth. Makes it so much smaller in my heart. I do plan to visit Sydney someday and these words will help me in my sojourn. There is really a land of OZ? I thought that was a made up place because of the classic movie. Don't call me dumb but I truly did.

An very beautiful work of art and landscape here poet. I wish you well in the challenge.
Much Love ♥

Zowie! Amazing poem, Jen, and things I had never before heard of - like giants and alien landing zones. There are still many mysteries! Beaut poem, well done!

Dear Jen
Your poem is proof that I made the right decision when I was 21 to stay in Australia. I loved it then and it still holds a special place in my heart. However, NZ will always be home even though I live in the USA now.
Love and hugs,
Petratani

Dear Jenelda,
I hope that Darlene hasn't taken out a copyright on her comment to my entry 'coz I'm gonna copy it and say:
WOW!
A great nomn-entry! Congratulations of a great contest.
But I see that the King still managed to introduce his boob fetish (not to mentionm those revolting recipes!)
Love, Heathcote.

Thanks Heath, yeah, he always manages to work Boobology into the poems.

Dear Jen, You are certainly right about the great sights to see in Australia. You should come to New Zealand to visit us, we have plenty of room and there are some great Kiwi guys over here, you might be lucky like I was.
Great poem Jen
Hine.

A beautiful place to live
from what you have written. I, at one time tried to get my hubby to immigrate to Australia but he is not as adventursome as I am...he needed to stay put in the good old USA..I think if I could choose a different place it would be your country but for the remainder of this life I will stay here in mine and be happy where I am planted. Your contest is education to say the least...Looking forward to reading a lot more about Australia...even about the Wombat stew Catz has cooked up for Yem..

It was a wonderful tour, not only of Australia but of your life. More people should do one of these. Too bad you can't win your own contest, because you might....not might, probably would.

Thanks Yem for your grouse words. (great-wonderful in aussie slang) Will look forward to your entry.

Dear Jen,
You have painted a delightful picture of our country. There are some beautiful places to visit that I have still yet to see. Nicely written and a delight to read.

Thank you Jene
Thank you so much for the "Mini tour" I would prolly fit more in the outback as I fit more in the wilderness here. Yes there is still some if you know where to look. In fact my wife & I are planning on building our house out on the reservation in about 2 years. I have always wanted to see Australia. Maybe one day before I pass. Great write I throughly enjoyed the read. Thanx again ~Ron~

Thanks Ron for your comment.
There is plenty of wilderness in Australia you could visit.
A house on the reservation sounds grand, but not for me, I like suburbia. Good luck on your venture.

Dear Jenelda,
I know how Ozzies tend to skite
that things in OZ are bigger'n better
but giants? Now I think I'll write
John Howard (your PM) a letter.
You say you saw some artifacts
which proved that giants once existed.
Well, I don't want to poke borax
but I think you got your knickers twisted.
I admire your great imaginations
'bout giants who before men trod,
but they were Yemassee's relations
who, MOXIEfied, thought they were God.
And all those rocks in quaint design
they weren't for guiding ships from space
but they were used, when it was fine,
as markers for a relay race.
There's lots of rocks around the world
that Yem's athletic forbears placed.
Stonehenge is one example hurled
and left behind them where they raced.
So now I've helped to put you straight
apart from giants, I liked the rest.
I think you poem is really great
and wish you luch in this contest.
There's lots of things to do and see
even if you don't leave Seednee!
Love and hugs, XXX Hugh R.

Dear Hugh, there is-there is evidence of Giants roaming the earth!
I saw them with my very own eyes!
The clubs were sooooo big they'd squash us.
Thankyou for your comment dear friend.

After reading your contest page and this poem, who would not want to visit Australia. I've always thought of it as a mighty wonderland and for several years considered trying to get permission to live there. Then gave up, no way I could qualify with Australia's strict immigration laws... and it was too far to swim to go in illegally
.
Your poem is filled with just a few of the many splendors of Oz. Someday... maybe. Maybe someday.
This is a wonderful idea for a contest by the way

Thanks Dee for your bonza comment.
If you can't get into Ozzie land try the next best thing: New Zealand. Hugh, Joan and Hine and Heathcote rave about it.
I must go there myself one day: after seeing more of my country first.
