Daffodil Demise

You came in March with spears held high,
Green spears that pointed to the sky.
An army, stood in serried ranks
In meadows, fields and grassy banks.
Sometimes in clumps of three or four
Around most country-garden doors.

A touch of yellow at your tips,
Waiting while a late frost nips.
Unfurling in warm April sun,
Your brief beauty just begun.
Sometimes tall and full of grace
Some have cups with orange trace.

Most are yellow, some are pale
Touched by moonlight`s silver trail.
A yellow, unmarked, perfect hue,
Glistens in the morning dew.
Gossiping when not at rest,
Nodding heads to acquiesce.

All too soon your beauty fades
At the end of April`s days.
Fading trumpets, tinged with brown,
Limply your green leaves hang down.
Although your time with us is brief
From winter you brought glad relief.

Author notes

As Vicki has missed Spring this year, I have recorded it here especially for her.

Ah, the fresh breath of spring breaking through. I am so sorry to have missed the reality of it, but this has allowed me to relive it in my mind. Thank you for the words you have written for me.

Ahhh spring!! A short but most glorious time of year. It actually is my favorite and you caught the fleeting, delicate beauty of it here in a most wonderful way. good job with this one.

They are the trumpets announcing Spring's return. Lively poemy and lusiously scribed rhyme of the March of the Daffodilles.

lovely rhyming; I thought the first stanza was about asparagus until I looked at the title. Yes, our poor daffodils had a shroud of snow about them the first day of spring and it kind of put a damper on them.

And she can read and reread all about the coming of spring now. How thoughtful, and it is her favorite season too. Lovely piece.

Thank you so much for your entry and good luck
