The Trillium

A beautiful and fragile flower
is the lonely trillium,
her garnet petals much desired
and tragically abused.
Why should she bother pushing forth
through rock and soil to reach the sun,
when all that might await her there
are plucking hands and death?

'Tis true that some by carelessness
or outright wanton cruelty
despoil this floral gem of forest
and rend her being mortally,
and yet her hopeful blossom opens
wide in search of one who'd view her
for the treasure that she is
and help her there to thrive.

For not all of those who view this jewel
would grasp and tear so callously.
Wounded trillium reluctant to
allow her face to be revealed
must yield to gentle hands and weather
if she e'er desires to bloom again,
for with lack of blossom she is empty.
With bud's swelling, she's complete.

Author notes

Hope this isn't too abstract. The whys of trusting are difficult, but we're only half-beings if we close in on ourselves.

    beauty has a price

Wow, this is a beautiful, inspiring, and true write. I love the way you've conveyed this idea, of a flower's purpose to be seen and to be beautiful, and the danger and death that can all too often come along with this purpose. The imagery and wording of this poem is dead on to create the images and ideas of this thought; thank you for inspiring me!

I think some of earth's most valuable lessons are those compared to gardening or flowers. The Trillium is a flower I must write about now because of her remarkable resilience; yet, she is not a doormat and will not tolerate habitual abuse (good for her!). By the way, I garner little from flat, dull, or uninteresting poetry. To me, the message must be played up by imagery utilizing all the creativity and poetic devices one can muster up. You have done that and more for me in this piece. Belle

i love the way that you put this here. had the write not been so subtle on the abuse issue, or rather had it been angry, you would not have had the same effect you have had on me. thank you for your entry and i wish you the best of luck. viyanna rosemarie

    I found it.

I did not find it too abstract, and I found it to be a compelling read. You phrased this extremely well.
