felt tired and slow,
like all of time did stop
in her calm, quiet presence.
She looked at me carefully,
taking the measure of me,
deciding if I was worthy
of some knowledge that she held.
The wrinkles on her face
held an air of wisdom,
as she closed her watery eyes
and licked her thin dry lips.
Her rice paper fingers
brushed some loose strands
of her soft, gray hair
back towards its’ bun.
“I’ve lived a long time,
and seen a lotta things.
Yet there is just one thing
I ever found that mattered.”
“Life is not just something
that we need to get through.
Our life is a gift from God,
and should be a gift to God.”
With this wisdom
dutifully bestowed,
she seemed to deflate,
resting against a pillow.
I watched her for awhile,
feeling quite unworthy,
of these words
that took a lifetime to learn.
Please tell me what you think

This is phenomenal! Just beautiful! Such an aerial view of the phases of existence. Well written with so much context. The old woman's advice is in a perfect place in the poem.Very climactic as I anticipated her words. You must be proud of your wisdom to recognize the lesson that was taught in this piece.
