Who Put the Scarecrow In the Onion Patch

Every year there's garden in here.
This gives Mother Nature and me something to do.
We take our time, and watch them grow.
There is a lot of time, and effort put into this.
This in my time of playing farmer you see.

Potatoes in by the light,or the dark of the moon.
Which ever it is beats the heck out of me.
Radishes and lettuce and a few onions on the far back side.
Tomatoes and beans across the front, in the sun.
And loads of sweet corn in the back.

Then out of the shed, for my fair weather friend.
  My knight in shining armor.
Out in the middle of the garden he goes.
He needs a new shirt, and a little stuffing too.
A new scarf and hat will make the old man look new.

That night as I went to bed to sleep,
I knew the work done, was complete.
The next day I, find my scarecrow,
He must have walked in his sleep.
He stood so proud in the onion patch.

I looked for foot prints,
Not a one could be seen.
I moved him back to where he needed to be.
The next day the same, he was moved.
He stood so proud in the onion patch.

I tied ribbons on his arms.
  They streached to the fence.
They were decorated with pie tins.
Where he stood he covered it all.
So proud he stood, with almost a grin on his face.

He must have been one of those guys who liked onions.

I think no one knows how important a scarecrow is to a garden! this one must have loved the smell of onions...I know I do! My mom never cooked anything without onions and garlic in it and oh it smelled so good!

This scarecrow knew where the most imporant part of the garden was!

    Lovely write

Takes me back to the days of my garden at the farm...I knew the deer loved the onions.. Wonder if there was some conspiracy? Kidding aside a lovely flow and an interesting title and subject..Most unique and entertaining!

Alas, I live in an apt. now, no more garden for me, but I think I know why your "knight in shining armor" keeps moving to the onion patch. You see, he is trying to protect them from me, he knows how much I love onions, I could eat all you have planted in a matter of minutes!

Plus, eating all those onions helps me be alone for a while...

You might have to stay up all night to catch that scarecrow moving. Good write, Mac, enjoyed it.

This is a marvelous poem Mac. I remember as a child we had gardens. It was during the 2nd world war and they were called Victory Gardens. In my later yrs. I planted a garden with leafy veggies. I worked hard on it. In a few days I noticed all the plants were gone. There was a family of Rabbits under the shed.
My husband (this was yrs. before our divorce) said I can get rid of them if you want me to. I said no.
    Keep up the good writing.

LOL This is such a cute poem that you have going on in here. I like it. It was a great little story telling poem and those are my favorite kind. I liked how the scarecrow would creep back to the onions. I would have picked the tomatoes myself but like you said he must be an onion guy! Eew! lol You did a great job of expressing yourself. And I couldn't rate your comment because it was too short in the big box so I returned a comment instead.

Perhaps the scarecrow knows something you do not.I used to have an allotment some years ago And i well recall once I had planted the onion sets The next few days would see some of them pulled out of the ground They say the birds do it So maybe you should listen to the old Scarecrow A wonderful little tale and one that I am sure you could expand on.
    Excellent

    So cute.

This is a fabulous poem about gardening. Perhaps the chap knew that green onions are a delicacy to be eaten with tomatoes and cucumbers. A lovely and witty poem.
