It Was You
By Robyn Dunsdon
I felt Your breath against my face;
Fleeting thoughts, world winds of lies took over my motives, my longings, my heart.
The guilt I had known so well made the pink turn to white,
But it was not that which shook my presence, my being, that day;
It was You.
Why must I return every time to that place of regret and dried tears;
I loved You and I knew it.
You offered me a feast; a banquet of peace.
The room was crowded though, and I couldn't get to You.
I couldn't get to You.
Never mind those eyes!
Never mind those deceitful holes of vanity and greed;
They watched me running, searching, asking for help in panic and desperation,
But did nothing.
My mind sought this out.
Past every obstacle, shortcut, victory and defeat,
I never saw You there.
But as I felt that breath against my face,
One truth, both alarming and strangely inviting, remained:
It was You.
