Only One Boot

Easter Monday, four days old
baby wakes up, alone and cold,
a new found place for it's eyes to rest,
as weeping eyes know it's for the best.

Daddy smells that she's gone,
he shakes his sorry head,
momma cleans up the rest,
ready's them for bed.

Four babies left
in a disastrous place,
we sit together,
drying the tears on our faces.

Baby twin sister weeps in her sleep,
as brother and others lay in a heap.
Together they fall, losing a sister,
a loved one, a newborn, they're sure gunna miss her.

It was nobody's fault, but she got the call
to go somewhere else, where tears don't fall.
So she closed her eyes, and took her last breath of air,
and with her tongue sticking out, she left without a care.

Baby girl, I cry,
I tried my best to bring you back,
but we all know that what God wants, he gets,
and that's a fact.

I'm sorry I failed you,
we all miss you so much,
it's empty in my hand,
number five I do not touch.

So here I sit in my living room,
staring at the babies in the crate,
and on a scale of one to ten,
fifteen is what you rate.

But you're long gone now,
as I look to the sky,
tears fall from my eyes as I
wish you goodbye.

Farewell baby girl,
I'll miss you always,
goodbyes are so hard,
but I've got to say it anyway.

Author notes

My dog (rotty) Isis had puppies on Thursday. She had a litter of 9, but 4 were already dead when they came out. (2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon)That didn't make me cry because they passed peacefully...
In total, she had 8 girls, 1 boy. The last 2 to come out were twins (their feet looked like they were wearing high heeled cowboy boots - hence I named the one Boots) but this morning when I woke up, I noticed that Isis fell asleep with one of the babies under her arm... (she sleeps with the only boy and the runt by her heart) I tried to give it mouth to mouth, everything, nothing worked.

My dad was so upset he was yelling at me over the phone, taking it out on me, blaming me, everything. So I took the dead puppy to the vet's this morning, and they said there was nothing I could do, I did my best.

I've been crying all day, I know it's a part of life, I know we would have had to give them away soon anyway, but this one was my favourite. And now her sister cries in her sleep, their daddy Siris cries, he's not running around like usual or anything, and the mother is depressed.

This was the puppy my boyfriend was supposed to get. :'( I can't stop crying...

9 babies, 5 died.. 4 left.. >_< death cannot win!

your right life isnt fair, i could tell you how much i feel for you, my dog isnt doing so great, he's been ill for a long time, he's very old, dad tried to kill him the other day to put him out of his misery, but it didnt work, and dad hasnt taken him to the vet, i dont think he will either, i miss my dog even though he's not really gone yet, he hasnt had a good life, its been real hard for him but he keeps going, i love him for that, but it pains me to look at him anymore...so i can relate alittle, i feel sad for you and sad for my own dog...

Omg, I'm so sorry. I...can't believe that many puppies died. Wow. I am so sorry.... It's good you wrote about it and everything. When I write when I am upset it doesn't compare to what you wrote when you're upset. Like...it's really good, and there is some good abab rhyming and rhyming couplets.

I was hoping you'd come back to writing, but I am sorry about the circumstances, really I am.
