Misplaced Honor

Dear Mr. President: Caretaker of American Honor

I am writing you today about something I consider a serious
but correctable problem.  It seems you have misplaced my
honor as an American. Now, I am sure this is just an
oversight on your part but I deem it important enough
to demand answers.
First, my America is a federal republic not a democracy.
I reread the Constitution the other day and I did not
find one reference to democracy in it. So how did we become a democracy? I would like to
believe this is only a clerical error in labeling.
Surely this can be easily corrected. If i remember correctly
it used to be spelled FEDERAL REPUBLIC in case some poor
civil servant has lost the original file. If it would help
I will send you copies of my Constitution and Declaration of
Independence. I know for a fact that Senator Byrd from West
Virginia keeps one in his pocket. I am sure his staff would
gladly provide as many as necessary in this regard.
Secondly, as a citizen, I know how important my vote is.
I also know that selling that vote is against the law.
So answer me this. Why does it seem that all my elected
officials are wearing corporate logos? I have only two hands,
so how can my elected officials have their hands in so
many pockets? if I cannot sell my vote then how can you
sell yours since it belongs me by proxy? You are my elected
servant. I am not yours. Is this no longer a true statement?
enlighten me if I am wrong.
Now back to my lost honor again. My America does not start wars.
it has been my finding in my study of history that countries who
start wars usually lose them as we seem to be doing now in Iraq.
I make no mistake when stating our democratic government started
this war and in doing so, called my country's honor into question
throughout the world. This is wrong. We are supposed to be the
shining light of freedom not oppression. We are supposed to be
missionaries of freedom not lackeys of a corporate government.
Our soldiers die. Their families grieve as politicians make
high sounding speeches as they lay dead roses on their graves.

This is unacceptable to me as a citizen and former soldier.
In conclusion, America used to lead. it now bullies. America used
to be free but now we hold people in prisons without benefit of
the rule of law. Poverty and hunger daily around the world grows
worse. Now poverty and hunger rears its ugly head at home.
so I ask, as a humble American in search of his honor please
relight the torch of freedom and liberty that used to guide
my way through the dark of night. Please find my America and
bring it home.

    This is NOT a poem!

The validity (or lack thereof) of your sentiments is irrelevant. This is a poetry contest, not a soapbox.

omg...i just about cried at the end of this w/your "please find my america and bring it home." i couldn't express enough to you how much this piece meant to me. it wasn't just out of anger, which a lot of people (whom i do not blame) feel, but with such remorse and regret for a country lost. i love the feeling of attachment with america...our home and our land. this was written so honestly and i really enjoyed it! thanks so much for sharing and for your entry!

Oh yes, before I forget ...

your poem doesn't address the purpose or premise of this contest. I asked for poems about how we might deal with the massive divide shaping up in the Democratic Party, pull it together, and beat McSlug in the fall. This is very good, but it doesn't have anything to do with the contest.

    Very good ...

and spot on in all respects. However, you're addressing someone who has no concept of honor whatsoever. It's not liable to do much good.

    The one thing.

The one thing that is outstanding in this is the fact that you state your vote is not for sale. And you made some valid points. Some may not agree with all the points but because I believe in our Bill Of Rights you are by far entitled to this. Glad your vote is not for sale and neither is mine.

Ah but like all high and mighty nations before your America they all rise and fall into normality when they think they are a god or deity for the world and part of that is to 'police' the world or in other words get in and get what they want take it by force get out and dont worry about what they left behind. Why do they stick their noses and fingers into other peoples pies ..for a slice of the action .... why do they send in their corporations to 'rebuild' their destruction getting it both ways....destroy with one hand and rebuild with the other...and bugger me where do all the profits go yeah not in your hand being a citizen but into the corporations who put the money up to back the conflict in the first place...now looking at that why did the infamous government of yours train people like bin laden use them then toss them aside ...had to come back and bite you on the arse sometime...yet the rise and fall of your once great nation continues on the downward slide. The really really sad part is the people of your beautiful land are hurting and hurting badly....there is an aura of sorrow and heartbreak. Ihave a strong connection to your country it goes back into my own heritage I would not be here today in my present form at least if not for my grandfather and his family. So i say my words from my heart not out of kick them when they are down but with a heartfelt sorrow for all the pain caused within and without...my hearts wish for peace fueled with joy and happiness that all people walk this earth with enough food have shelter medical needs are meet and in between stop and look at the beauty of this world to be able to watch animals grazing or playing and see the wonderment of nature soak it up listen to her calling and know at the end of the all when the moon and stars rise all is as it should be in this world of peace and harmony....always in peace and harmony been my motto for years. I live in hope have to for without hope what do we have but greed of man. yeah off the soap box.

In America Honor is certaily . . Misplaced

The greatest gift that God can give us
Is to see ourselves as others see us. .

Well done - I think America need to read the foreign press a bit more, Mr Bush is far from being a shining example of anything other than greed and selfishness . . Sadly the whole world has a sad option of America and rightly so.

In America Honor is certaily . . Misplaced
