I sift through my memories
Like torn pages from a faded book,
My eyes glistening like when they were once real,
And I wonder,
If things had been different,
Where I'd be in this slumbering world.
My pale haunted skin reflects my mood,
Forever saddened, forever searching for him,
My opaque lover who holds my opaque heart.
My rich brown hair still reflects the sun,
Still waves in the morning breeze,
As if it had a life of its own,
Exactly as it did on that dreadful day
When we broke apart
Unintentionally, but fatefully.
I still search for his contagious smile,
His perfect lips, his comforting hold.
But, alas, I never find him,
No matter how hard I try,
So I find comfort in others that live,
In those who can give me the emotion
And love that I desire.
I keep searching for my lover,
Regardless of how many times I have not found him,
The living can only give me so much affection,
The rest, only my lover can give.
In soft midnight breezes,
I whisk through the night in search of my love,
And as I come across living men in their houses,
I press my hands against their windows,
The pressure cracking the glass
Underneath my fingertips
As I scan the room for my lost heart.
And when I do not see him,
I use the mortals fear of me as an emotional boost,
An inadequate compensation for my true presence
Here in this world,
Where men flinch at my name.
For all have seen me, felt me, tasted me
In their slumber,
And those who have not yet
Experienced my sweet delight,
Will regret the day they heard the words:
'Let me in...' and complied with my request.
