It began with kindling against winter's fury
the felling of trees to keep humans warm;
the sign of protection evoking awe
as it shone in the southern night,
its brilliance radiating power.
Who then brought it down to earth
banishing its brightness,
fashioning its hard strength
creating an aura of fear and death?
It became Rome's shadow across the lands
hardening into terror
outstretched arms and pinnioned feet;
a holy trepidation, but no refuge
against the streaming flight
of thousands of human torches
bordering the emperors' roads.
Now an icon of death
its shadow embraces human hearts
transformed anew by hands
crossing breast and forehead;
omen of sorrow and consolation.

. . .but for the truth penned here,
the world would be a better place. Our shame as Christians is not original sin, but the sins and deaths perpetrated over centuries, in His name.
This is most thought provoking and well written. I am bookmarking this to come back and read a multitude of times.
Thank you for sharing this
