Closing the Distance

--- ~~~ ---

Buying a train ticket, holding it near her heart
it won't be long till you steal my heart.
Sold everything, to be near you -
for how can this not be so.  Your letter
said you were still thinking of me, but
the distance was to far for you to come.
I hope in my heart of hearts that you
meant this could last if we both make it work.
- ~ -
I glance again from calendar to clock,
begrudging time's agonizing crawl in bringing you to me.
I'm nervous, elated, frantic, all at once.
You are never far from my thoughts, pleasantly haunting
me awake or in dreams. I think of you giving up so much to join
me and pray I can be worthy of the gesture.
As for stealing your heart, I have to laugh.
You don't need two, and you already have mine...
- ~ -
Thinking of the last time he saw her, hair disheveled from a night of love
making, seeing him next to her, brings a smile.
Half way there, it is now time to board a different train.
Emotions running high, for its almost time to catch the last
train the will bring me into your arms once again.
Scared what the future will hold, but knowing who
and what you are makes it all the easier.
For my heart belongs to you now.
-~-
Your impish grin from beneath that brunette cloud,
eyes that shine in a way that melts me.
To look into them every day and see love reflecting back
at me is something I only dared to dream of.
That it is actually happening is bliss. My heart thrills in
knowing that every sweep of the clocks hand
carries you another mile nearer.
Whatever the future holds I'll welcome, so long as it holds you.
- ~ -

Looking at my watch, only three more hours till I
arrive.  Wanting it to be sooner, doesn't
help pass the time.  So nervous now, that is getting close.
I rest my head against the back of the chair,
looking out window as everything becomes a blur.
Everything moving so fast, but all I can
think of is being in your arms again, making
love to you and never letting go.
The smell of you, your touch, you whispering
into my ear.  That is all I desire from you.
-~-
I pace restlessly across the terminal floor.
The station master has already offered to throw me
out if I ask once more if your train will be on time.
I can't help it as I shift between daydreams of the last
time I held you close then back to this anxious vigil.
Checking again down the track I see my own reflection
in the glass. I don't know for sure what you see when you
look at me, but I see everything I want in the briefest glance
at you. I look for you and see a vision of beauty as you decend
the steps from a nearby car. I see a single tear roll past your
timid smile before I notice I'm grinning like a fool. I sweep you
into my arms again, promising you I'll never let go...

This poem reminds me so very much of the very first time I travelled to see the EX, Sly. I'm afraid of airplanes, have a tendency to get car and bus-sick, so I travelled from Jersey to Mississippi by train. It was supposed to be a 24-hour trip, but being we were behind a S-L-O-W freight train for most of the journey it took 28 hours.

Your poem captures that anticipation, and the thrill of meeting that someone special, already so very much loved, very well. Best, best and happiest wishes to both you and the lady too!
