How The Easter Bunny Came To Be

Missing image
Once upon a time, a very, very long time ago, a beautiful white bird was flying the northern skies. It was a harsh time and the ground below was covered with many inches of snow. The trees were bare of all cover and the chilling wind blew aimlessly hither and thither.
The beautiful white bird was returning to the mountains to nest but had been delayed by the events surrounding a man carrying a cross in the town where he had spent the summer. The white bird had seen the pain in the man’s eyes as the weight of the cross weighed heavily on his shoulders and weighed him down. While they gazed at each other the beautiful white bird noted a knowing smile from the man and a gesture from him for the bird to fly on home and not delay leaving the city. However the bird dallied and eventually witnessed the man being nailed to the cross at his hands and feet and a crown of thorns placed on his head and heard the people jeering and taunting as they threw abuse at him.
After they had all gone, the white bird nestled at the man’s blood stained feet.
A droplet of blood fell upon the bird’s feathers but the bird paid it no heed.
While waiting there until the man’s family and friends came to take him away, the bird asked the man on the cross if was there was anything he could do.
“Only one thing beautiful little bird, forgive them for they know not what they do.” Said the man.
And so the beautiful white bird finally left for the stark cold north.
He became very tired for he had been flying non stop for days it seemed and he was also very hungry but every thing on the ground was covered with snow. He had to find something to eat though and decided to take his chances and fossick at the bottom of the bare trees for any little tit-bit.
Alas there was no food to be found and being too tired to fly on, the beautiful white bird fell asleep and perished there on the snow during the night.
In the morning, Eostre, the Goddess of the Dawn found the white bird.
She felt great pity that one so beautiful should perish in the snow and using her magic powers as a Goddess she transformed the bird into a beautiful white Arctic hare so that it could forage in the snow and find food. The transformation however was not complete and the beautiful white Arctic Hare could still lay eggs as would a bird.
There was a great difference. The eggs were very special. They were all the colours of the rainbow and could only be laid and found once a year and that was at the time Eostre changed the bird into a hare.
For this was the time of a new beginning. The very same time when the man who died on the cross in the city so far away was laid to rest in a cave and rose again to live forever in the heavens.

    Very good

This is a very creative story of Jesus Christ. I probably wouldn't thought it up this way to tell the story about him. I love the writing and keep up the good work and I hope to read some more of your writings soon.

Someone said they disagreed with the religion mixing.
It's not mixing, Christendom borrowed things from many religions, not that it's a bad thing.

Okay, back on topic to this write. I love it. The languageis wonderful, and the idea is just awesome I hope to see more like this about for sure!

A very fanciful flight. It does have all the earmarks of a wonderful children's story. I am bothered at mixing God with paganism, but as it is fiction, allowances are made.

Structurally, this could use some work. Punctuation and better formatting would help it.

Content wise, it is just what a child needs, a simple way to explain larger issues until they can understand them for themselves.

    Thank you for sharing.

This is a lot different to what I would normally read on here, but I saw you were featured, and came to have a look. You have created a wonderfully enchanting little tale here, full of magic and wonder. I love how the bird became the rabbit and could still lay eggs! Great job!

    TOUCHING AND BEAUTIFUL

THE EGG IS THAT OF MAN
    IF HE BELIEVES IN GOD
HE IS WHITE AND PURE WHEN MAN LOOKS INSIDE
WHEN GOD LOOKS INSIDE HE SEE THE GOOD - THE GOLDEN SOUL
THIS IS I BELIEV WHAT HE WANTS TO SEE IN ALL OF US DAILY.

This was so great. Cute and creative, a wonderful explanation of how the Easter bunny came to be. I love how you incorporated Jesus into this, too, not fogetting the true meaning of Easter.

    My Dear Sammy

I am a Griot of sorts so I read this poem as if I had an audience of children seated on the floor in front of me. The first lines made me smile for we have "many inches of snow" on the ground here as we speak. We actually have a white Easter and did not have a white Christmas. The world is ever-changing. LOL

This is so poignant and touching my friend. It is spiritually sound and gives the reader a chance to witness the beauty of life in your words and the sensations felt upon finishing this poem. This is a splendor Sammy and it is good. There is a rich urgency to forge ahead with renewal in this writ, and a gathering of ALL spirits. I love this with all my heart. This is what I mean b y spirituality instead of religion. Religion separates, spirituality binds.

I was looking for something to share with the cast at rehearsal tonight since we must rehearse, and prepare for our opening on Wednesday, and have to stray from our families on this Holiday eve. Thank you.

Please allow me to copy this so that I may share it with my cast members. Very soothing and inspirational poetry here. Then again, I expect nothing less from you. I am well aware of your storytelling abilities. This one sparkles.

    Love You Dearly,

    Have a Blessed Easter! ♥

    Renee

What a sweet folk tale this could become - relating Easter - the true message, and the Easter bunny and colored eggs all in one story. Very creative - enjoyed the read. A lovely tale for old and young alike.

    Bravo!

A charming tale Sammy, you are always able to tap into what makes a good story, no one could begin to read and not follow through to the end! Children always see the wonder of a story, recognising that special eliment of the magic you weave with your magic pen is always a winner for both adults and children alike. It is so good to see you writing again my dear man.

    Always,

    ~Katie~

    THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SAMMY

Ah yes I remember reading this in chapter ten verse 5-17 in the good book of Sammy LOL I wonder how God would look at shearing double bill with a putative Germanic goddess, but what a story. I'd pay Mel to film this one... and why stop there I think Hercules and Samson could take down the walls of Jericho.. I think you have started something crossovers have been around, but not between the religious sector and what of Zena and Moses crossing NewZeland looking for Middle Earth. you have filled me with endless possibility great little tale look forward to more....

    Delightful story

The real truth, is Commercialism has brought easter, christmas, for its buy, buy, buy. They do not care the dates, time or anything as long as we spend money. It bothers me, such crudeness for love.

Love the metaphor and the more "LewisISH" transformation of the Lord's sacrifice. How clever! You may have truly started something here.

I have a children's picture book with the same title.
It's got a mix of secular thought with a more psychological 'lesson' but prayer is threaded throughout for the sake of my faith.

    I loved this. Great one.
If you need a Level 2 critique, let me know.

Bless you, and may all the children's eyes
see the early understanding of the cross. Wowee.

    Superb is an understatement!

    Sammy,
You're gift of story telling continues to and always amazes and astounds me. You tell a story in such a way as to give one the feeling that this is folk lore that has been passed down through the ages. My ex (who is jewish) would always give me a hard time each Easter as to how and the relation the rabbit has to Easter, and the fact that it delivers eggs. For 27 years this would go on. I know have an answer. All that aside, this is such a charming and heart warming story. Your want for children to understand and the way you make it so can only come from one with whom the child still lives in their heart. I do hope that you don't mind as I am going to print this and read to my nieces tomorrow. I do think that my entire family will enjoy your story. Bless you Sammy, that you share your gift with us makes us twice blessed. Please have a wonderful Easter.
    Much love always,
    ~Michelle~
