You create your own dreams

Something slipped through the thin web of sleep that tangled around me,
A voice, someone crying maybe, whimpering quietly.
Pushing back the amber and silver curtains of a dream, I went in search of the voice,
My feet met black, cracked ground that held no moisture,
not a trace of the nutrients of life,
I steadily pushed through the thorns that ran across the path, their black tendrils choking what was left of dieing, lightning struck trees.
I was confused.
I couldn't remember who I was or how I had come to be laying in the white canopy bed in the middle of the black desert.
The ground was hot under my pale feet and I knew I should be worried about them burning, but strangely, I couldn't even feel them.
I couldn't feel anything, and neither did my white shift catch on the thorns it ran along,
It was like the things around me were sand,  sliding and blowing past me.
As I got closer to the noise the sky began darkening and rocks began pushing up higher around me, closing me inside the pathway of thorns.
Fire licked up between the crevices in the ever-steepening hillside I was climbing,
and snakelike creatures pushed their heads out of cracks around my feet.
I moved on towards the large opening that yawned before me,
hearing the crying rise and fall from inside it.
The ground shook, and I stumbled into the gaping cave, feeling as if I had been swallowed.
I cried out in fear, almost all the light around me was gone, but at that moment
flames leaped up around me revealing the glittering sides of the cavern I was in and the thin girl sitting in a heap on the ground, looking at her hands and whimpering.
"What's wrong?" I asked as I leaned towards her, forgetting my own fear.
She continued to cry.
"I'll help if I can," I said crouching down and reaching out my hand to her.
My hand was an inch away from her arm before I noticed the blood that ran down her dress and that she was looking at her hands because they were covered in dirt, blood and large burn marks.
"What did you do?" I asked in horror.
"I didn't do anything," she said with an impish, mocking voice.  "You did."
When she looked up, a hideous mockery of my face stared back at me,
my mouth was a slit in her face and my skin a sickly yellow,
my eyes were dark and my cheeks hollow, and printed across her forehead was written the word "Reue"
I understood.  I remembered.  and I smiled.
"Today is brand new." I said.  The desert melted and I woke up with the sun in my eyes.
