Gethsemane

Missing image
A familiar place. He had come to this garden often.
His friends knew it well. His enemy knew it well.
Now the hour was dark. The time was near.
He needed strength. He needed resolve. He turned to his friends.
“Keep an all night vigil with me. Pray. This is a desperate hour.
The time is evil. Tonight temptation will be strong. Pray.
I am in agony my friends. My heart is troubled. Pray.”

“Why is this night different from all other nights?”
asked the youngest child at the table.

He stepped away, only a stones throw and dropped to his knees.
“Daddy, oh daddy, if there is any other way to save them
without the pain this body must endure, then, then, take this burden from me.
My purpose is set. I will receive the wrath and all their pain.
I am willing to do your bidding to save those I love dearly.”
His sweat poured out from him like the blood he would soon shed.
A messenger was sent from above to comfort and strengthen him.

On this night a lamb was sacrificed. Its blood covered our doors
so that the messenger of death would pass over us.

Rising with renewed strength, he went to check on his friends.
“Are you sleeping, my brothers? Wake. Pray for yourselves.
The time is evil. You must be shielded and strengthened. Pray.”
He went away to pray gaining more resolve and strength.
“Daddy, daddy, if there is any other way
our loved ones can be saved, let us do that.
My aim is to save those we love in the way you have prescribed. "

Tonight we eat the bread of affliction.
Tonight we are forgiven of our sins.

His friends still slept as he went to check on them again
so he let them sleep and turned back to the only one able to help
Saying the same words for there were no others.
He prayed to his Father for more resolve and strength.
“Daddy, daddy, if there is any other way
our loved ones can be saved, let us do that.
My aim is to save those we love in the way you have prescribed. "

Slavery is cruel, bitter and harsh.
This night we are free.

Awake, my friends, the betrayer is here. Now it must begin.
Awake, my friends, now I must go and you will leave.
Awake, my friends, my purpose is set. The course is laid.
Awake, my friends, they come with clubs and swords to take me.

We are prepared to flee.
Our deliverance is at hand.

Author notes

Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Mathew 26:36 - 46

At the Seder the Haggadah, the Book of Exodus, is read and the history celebrated with its stories, songs and prayers

Why? Why? Why?

At the Seder it is the youngest child at the table that answers the 4 questions asked at Passover.

Question Mark On all other nights we eat all kinds of breads and crackers.

Why do we eat only matzoh on Pesach ?

Matzoh reminds us that when the Jews left the slavery of Egypt they had no time to bake their bread. They took the raw dough on their journey and baked it in the hot desert sun into hard crackers called matzoh.

Question Mark On all other nights we eat many kinds of vegetables and herbs.

Why do we eat bitter herbs, maror, at our Seder?

Maror reminds us of the bitter and cruel way the Pharaoh treated the Jewish people when they were slaves in Egypt

On all other nights we don't usually dip one food into another Question MarkAt our Seder we dip the parsley in salt water and the bitter herbs in Charoset

Why do we dip our foods twice tonight?

We dip bitter herbs into Charoset to remind us how hard the Jewish slaves worked in Egypt. The chopped apples and nuts look like the clay used to make the bricks used in building the Pharaoh's buildings

We dip parsley into salt water. The parsley reminds us that spring is here and new life will grow. The salt water reminds us of the tears of the Jewish slaves

Question Mark On all other nights we eat sitting up straight

Why do we lean on a pillow tonight?

We lean on a pillow to be comfortable and to remind us that once we were slaves, but now we are free
