a system for a savior?

I used to think truth was a system
until I looked at the heart of what
He was saying.

I used to teach truth like a system
and now that they're convinced,
they wouldn't believe me
if I took them by the shoulder -
all the depths of sincerity in my eyes -
and said, "I was wrong."

But that's the trouble with the
unwavering definitives. Tell them
something's wrong, let them know
it's a sin to question it,
have them believe that their sacrifices
demonstrate faith and loyalty
and viola! What a perfect box you have.

It's a comfortable place, it really is.
You begin to mistake the inhumanity of it
for sainthood. Feed your esteem
with "I'm getting closer to the mark;
I'm walking the walk; I'm climbing the ladder"
Until your system is a vicious circle
and unless by some change in the heavens
you stop and realize that
you aren't okay
and that you're about as fake as
Ashley Simpson's microphone,
you will never realize how far away you are
from what He really intended.

And that's why I wish I could
tear down the metal walls
that I created
so for one moment you could taste
reality again
and realize that truth
is a lot closer to our hearts
than we ever imagined.

Author notes

It's not poetry, please don't critique it on that level.

I just needed to ramble.

    And this ...

but change "viola" in line 16 to "voila". If you wonder about a French word, ask me before using it.

    A+ Rambling!

It's nice to come back to your poetry after all this time and see how you flourished...

Tearing down walls is a difficult task, but remember that even metal corrodes in the acrid climate of self reflection, and the light that pours through the holes begins to illuminate the truth within and dispel the darkness.

To say I can relate to this is a vast understatement. I was reading Lewis just the other day and, in essence, he was saying that the more 'okay' you think you are (the closer to God we think we are) the less we really know Him. And I found myself there in that thought.
When we are truly growing close to Him we are not thinking of ourselves at all--in any way.

The good news is that those metal walls fall down much easier (and quicker) than they went up.
