Sleepless

I watched you in the moonlight,
Hours and minutes after.
Your fair hair silvered, face obscured,
Skin smoothed to alabaster.

I wonder what you dream of,
behind those flickering lids.
Are you remembering how the spring sun felt,
Back when we were kids?

Or do you dream of sad things?
Losses, terrors, harms?
I only hope you cannot dream
Of such things in my arms.

Your breath so gentle; sweet, so sweet,
Warms the space between.
I stroke the feather-wing of hair,
Wondering at it’s sheen.

I know I should be sleeping,
We both have things to do,
But how can I sleep
When in my arms
Lies such a wondrous gift as you?

if only we could protect those we love from the woes of the world, but that would be achieving the impossible. my philosophy is to breathe each moment in as deeply as you can because you never know which breath will be your last. so in that vein, i would stay up all night watching the one i love surrendering to sleep's tender grasp. and as you, i would hope that he is not dreaming of "such things" while in my embrace.

very emotive, tender write. welcome to AP.

I would say both of you are very lucky... and infact, you are very lucky for you are blessed not only with love but also the magic to put feelings so beautifully into words.. I almost felt a tender music in background while reading your poem...
