Sweet Memories

The joy is gone with Adam, he is gone,
but memories of him will never fade;
I thank you God, that I could know my son,
although new memories cannot be made.

The sweetness of his life is mine to keep,
the love he gave remains with me forever.
With passing years the fewer tears I weep,
but I shall not forget my Adam, ever.

Author notes

As a parent I have thought about these feelings, and although I do not yet know getsbetter, I offer my condolences with my verses.

Please forgive my standarized comment here, but I am too emotional to see or think straight to leave a proper comment but felt a comment was certainly called for. I want to thank you for taking the time to honor Gary and his son Adam. Your words and sentiment are truly felt, trust me. My tears don't lie.

    PS

You owe me one dollar for a box of tissues I used reading this.

A beautiful piece, Margaret, in honor of a sweet young boy. It is so difficult to lose a child in any way, but when they are so young, it seems to hurt so much more. Your heart is beautiful, my dear friend. Hugs, Patricia

Thank you Patricia - I tried to put myself in the place of a grieving parent. This poem is in quatrain form, with abab rhymes.

Thank you Rhonda - loss and grief assail everyone, though each has his own shades of meaning to contend with. If I can speak from my loss to someone else's comfort, my heart overflows. Thank you again for your comment and applause.

    All parents know--

--the pain in this, and the love, lost too soon, even if we have not been there yet. We protect them from harm but harm sometimes wins and then we have the memories.
We had an Adam in my community, a sunny little lad, who on returning from Kindergarten, stepped out from behind the school bus, and was sent flying by a truck, to land dead at his parents' feet across the road. It has been years but here and there along the highway on approaching bus stops, a large billboard with his picture, begs "Remember Adam." The first ones were prompt, from community contributions, but then other communities made copies. The billboards spread after the provincial police undertook the project, to put them throughout the province so it cannot happen again.
The truck driver was punished as the law decrees, but as you said, it does not bring him back.

Flawless meter and rhyme pass unnoticed in the meaning of this poem, as they should.
    Terry

Dear Terry, thank you for your sensitive reading. Sir Walter Raleigh referred to his children as "hostages of fortune", and so they are - tied to us with strong bonds, and just as liable (or more) to accident and illness as everyone else. It seems a great injustice that young people die, but they are not lost in vain at times, as with your story of Adam. I do not know how to comfort grief, mine or anyone else's, except to look for hope.
