Release

Deep in your dreams
the siren screams,
exhale a heavy groan.
Slow to awake,
tension headache
your constant metronome.

You cannot face your life today.
You plead to make it go away.
You crawl back into bed to stay.
sleep... sleep... sleep...
Your only release.

Acquire a shrink,
don't even blink,
pick up that phone and call.
Breathe deep then dial,
Your life's worthwhile,
don't be ashamed at all.

Before you run you first must walk,
with help of medicine and talk.
follow your program, do not balk,
seek... speak... treat...
soon you'll find release.

Thank you for entering the Health Care poems competition.

And I see that in the past you have received some enthusiastic comments about it.

However, I have to say that - to my ear - the last stanza is rather a let-down.

I am putting on the short-list, however; so please do not despair.

  • Good.

    Nice Job!

Been there before. It is definitely a sad time, but there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Just when we think mental illness has killed our souls. We can bounce back and it seems like a bad dream.

Yeah you're absolutely right, we have to make the effort to overcome things like depression. It's not always easy but is worth it. Thanks for your encouragement.

Wonderful words of advice here. I totally agree, as one who suffers exactly as you have described. Sleep if often my saviour, albeit briefly! Every word you have said is so true and you have written it clearly and succintly.
    All the best with this.
