Art of Faith

The path to God seems like a blank canvas,
The artist seeking inspiration.
With a wet brush in hand,
Painting philosophies with every stroke.

Observing colors on life’s pallet
Feeling every blank spot with
Brilliant, yet interpretive artistic vision.

Each artist hoping they paint
An unparallel masterpiece.
With shades of Christ, highlights of Buddha,
Splashed with hue of Vishnu.

The artist stands back-
Marveling in their abstract vision
They entitled their portrait "faith"
swearing it's the only true form
Of art in existence.

Author notes

This described about how I feel about the issue of faith and religion. Faith is whatever you chose to mold it into.

I actually totally agree to what you have written here, and especially the strong words in your author's notes

You have managed to pull the subject matter out of their box as well, and you used great imagery within the lines

Well done - thank you for entering the contest, I wish you the very best!

You represented this piece so simply and so perfectly. I think sometimes people get so caught up in trying to write about faith that they end up with a didactic piece of material that only very few clusters of people will enjoy. This was short and sweet, but really grasped an openness about religion and faith. That suits me well considering I don't have much affinity to most things religious.
I would just say that you don't need to capitalize each line, especially since you have phrases and sentences that extend over many lines. It just represents the poem in a more grammatically correct fashion.
    Overall, great piece!

I thought that there was a rich use of language and strong imagery conveyed. I did feel that there was overuse of the words 'artistic and artist', perhaps you could have slotted in another word?

I do think that your thoughts on the subject were expressed in an intriguing and intelligent way. I think that you expressed matters in an original way so the discussion on religion was not cliched.

    Pleasent read, well written work.

I've always felt there are too many people on this planet for there to be "one true path". Best line is "painting philosophies with every stroke."

Oh, I think in line three though - you want brush, not bush .

    Painting philosophies with every stroke

This is a beautiful sentence. I have learnt not to judge so that I would not be judged for judging. Comparing faith to an art work is by itself art, for God is also an Artist. This you see in the morning as the sun take hands with the sky. As God moves His fingers over the oceans and the streams therein reflecting his playful hand. When you hear the birds singing and trusting Him for the day's food, you know that He truely exists and is a wonderful Artist.

I really like the way you painted faith and religion with the imagery of art and, this shows me that it is a challenge and a struggle to remain true to god.

    "The artist stands back-
    Marveling in their abstract vision
    They entitled their portrait "faith"
And swears it's the only true form
    Of art in existence.

That his love is a gift.
I think it is amazing grteat job.

i sort of found this a bit cynical..especially the artist claiming their portrait is the only form of true art..LOL... but as for the pen(a different type of art)I found it very wll written in form and rythm..peace and harmony...desi

I completely agree with you. It's impossible that there is only "one right religion or faith"...Faith is what you choose it to be. Its how you perceive it and how you use it. Great poem and great perspective. It was a brilliant write!

    False paths

It was interesting seeing this poem after reading about Gotama's disappointment with yogic techniques in finding complete awareness. Sure, you can reach specific levels of other-consciousness, create your own personal (temporary) nirvana, but the moment you come out of your little trance, you are the same person, subject to suffering and desire. Nothing consciously crafted by the hand or mind of man can be truly divine.

Wow, this sums up religion pretty much perfectly to me . It's funny how most of the religions bicker with each other and when you look at the very basic aspects of them the ideologies within them almost always agree.

I personally try to take a little from each one, but that's an individual thing.

I'll be watching out for more from you .

Great metaphor you have continued throughout this poem - our faith can differ even though we all believe in some divine being -

    penned like a true artist!!!

this is a great piece of artistry the reminded me of 2 poems:the poem Ars Poetica but with a spiritual interpretaion and as well one of mind ,``Ars es longa, vita brevis``. This is a solid masterpiece that flow brillant through the reader's mind without any problem and etches a vivid visual imagery.

OH MY GOODNESS! i don't think anyone's ever explained it as splendidly as you have here.

    kudos. bravo. a true artist.

(i won't say any more, it's nice to revel in the truth of your words, there's no point in wreaking havoc on them with words of my own)

    deep imagery

thank you for expressing your view on religion so plainly. I loved the comparisons to a blank canvas and such. It "painted" a great picture. As for my views, I will say this: that religion is all false because there can only be and is only one true way. His name is Jesus...and we shouldn't try to over-complicate things with "religion"...it should just be "the way"...true, whole hearted worship...what we were created to do.-Papyrus

papyrus I can't saythe same thing with your comment read the poem. Each person thinks that there god or worshipie is the corret one. Which is in fact wrong you don't need to worship anything. AS long as you understand and go by your feelings of right and wrong. As long as you go by what is learned from the past can you only live and see the future and correct its mistakes. But yes that Is also the reason why this piece reached me as well. It happens to be true in all its blunt beauty. People fight over religion becuase it is an act of faith "they believe" what ever that means. When all they seriously need to do is have an idea and build on it.People think that god has not touched this earth when in fact they ignoring the signs and take advantage on the metaphorical signals they pick out for the rest of the world. Perhaps I am wrong for saying that but I don't think im too far from the scary truth. Stay sharp and keep up the good work!!!

    FANTASTIC!!!!

The path to God seems like a blank canvas
    The artist seeking inspiration

Oh these lines pull the reader in with caught breath.. just waiting to see what inspiration will be revealed, yet the truth lies in what is revealed to the individual soul.

As Debbie stated, I too agree with the One True God, and am a Christian and proud of it. Your words flow so smoothly off the page that it is both a delightful read, and awe inspiring thought provoking truth!

Faith.. the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen...

    "They entitled their portrait "faith"
And swears it's the only true form
    Of art in existence."

These lines leave me breathless.. so very well put. so true.. so intricate within the mind and soul.

Truly one of the best pieces I have ever read. I wish I could give you more than three applauds.

I really liked the way you portrayed your subject, for the first three stanzas...the last one only halfway rings true to me...most people who would mix Christ, Buddha, and Vishnu all together, I would think them to be a little more open minded...but that's just my personal emotional take on it..as far as the rest..It was very well put together, I love the vehicle of the artist and painting to convey the message..3 clappies

    ....now THAT is POETRY!

    It flows...
    It has imagery...
    It tells a story...

It made me want to keep reading as it carried me along on the breath of its own life...

    A 'pen write'
Painting pictures with words (a fav phrase of mine)

And yes...just as the artist is compelled by the canvas to take up the brush
So too is the writer compelled by the pen to take up paper..and tell its story

    Just brilliant! Love it!
