~~ Patchwork Quilts~~

Missing image
Cutting out old quilt pieces
Sewing them by hand
Stitching memories together
Preserving time and land~

It's much more than a quilt
It's a treasure to behold
Stitched with love and care
Warming us when nights are cold~

The time is soon forgotten
The traditions will not last
The quilts serve as a reminder
From families of the past~

Handed down through generations
Creating memories from the start
There is nothing like a quilt
Made with love from the heart~

This poem was especially enjoyable to me cos I LOVE quilts, I make them and everytime I see one or a pattern, it makes me want to go thru all my material scraps and think of which one I should do next... you put together a treasure of words to make this piece on quilts...it is sad the art is dying. Women just don't have time anymore, and now with the new quilting machines, they can be put together quicker and sell cheaper, but they don't have the charm of those made by loving hands in every stitch. I love this write...can't you tell!!! LOL I also love the photo and background!!!!! A super job Susan!!!
in case you're interested, some of my quilts can be seen at www.geocities.com/rubee99/quilts.html

My Mum quilts and while I lack the tolerence, I agree it is a treasured art form. Mum's even quilted intricate hand bags and all sorts of things, and they are always made with infinate amounts of love and care. It is a pleasure and a joy when you know she is making you something.

You capture the essence of that here. Good work. !!

I can't tell you, as most can't, how much the quilt my grandmother made for me means all these years after her death. Its so worn out, there are many holes in it, but I would kill someone who tried to take it away from me. Its folded and kept away from harm, and like her lace tablecloth (i even wrote about it) it will always be treasured by me and my daughters when I am gone. Nothing like family ties, its just the very best there is. Thank you, this is wonderful and means alot to me.

    I love this write!
    so nostalgic...wow!
i have a passion for old quilts too...lol..there's not much i'm not passionate about really hehe

wish i was a maker of quilts, alas! i have not the patience for the tedious work of sewing by hand..and should i make a quilt..hand sewing would be a MUST..none of that new machine stitching on my quilts!
There's a world wide quilt show held not far from me each spring (In Paducah)..beautiful work there!

very much enjoyed this write...you create such beautiful pieces!
    Love ya

I've always wished I had a quilt from a grandma or great grandma that was sewn by hand. I would treasure it forever, but I don't have one...I agree that they are so much more than a quilt, and i liked when you said they keep us warm at night, it was a nice little line that made me smile

sorry I haven't been reading susan, been really messed up...like a major roller coaster of emotions here...hate being female

Quilts are an emblem of American heritage. Look at a quilt and you automatically associate it with americana. It drew a wonderful picture of not only a heritage, but the warmth, love and closeness of the family. I enjoyed it immensely.

    Blushfulmoon rules!

Yes, I can see they are lovely, draped over the porch rail to air. I would bet my bottom dollar are a descendant of the pioneers. Right? A most useful form of poetry, making quilts. I don't know which of the beautiful people in the picture is you, but you are all very very beautiful. I am glad to be acquainted with you.

Made with love from the heart

I'm trying to make my mom one of these for her birthday (in august) with pictures of my siblings and me on it, but my sewing ability sucks and I'm not sure it's going to turn out so well... but it is the thought that counts right if it is "made with love from the heart" ?

    Great writing here!!!

Ohhhhhh Susan, this is so pretty!!!!! Yanno, my granny used to make quilts all the time before she died and my mom has them now, i used to cuddle up with them because they reminded me of all the special times me and my granny had together. Her quilts were unlike any other quilt or blanket i had ever owned, they were comfortable and beautiful, made with such ellaborate skill. Thank you so much for writing a poem that makes me think and remember my granny, i miss her so much. You did a great job, i loved this one too much!!

    excellent

Loved this, Blush, but I always love poems about the old days. This one flowed really well, and my mother and her mother and, prob her mother as well [on and on], made them as well. Thank you for a beautiful write and for bringing back some memories for me.

Terrific, Susan! I remember patchwork quilts from my childhood...a bunch of seemingly unrelated squares of cloth and yet, when sewn together, present a splendid quilt with a lot of memories sown in...old-fashioned miracles...

    This is great!

    Great!

Wow I really like this poem, it reminds me of some books I read, which bring back some memories when I was younger. I like the expression of feelings, the love. This poem is simple, yet shows me you have a lot of experiance. Be sure to tell me about your next poems! Can't wait to read them! -Susan
