Troogle

Persecuted pioneers once offered up their lives
for priesthood and the doctrinal plurality of wives
but just like Jews of old who understood a higher law
Many fell away inspite of miracles they saw

From tattered rags to riches as the Lord had prophesied
faithful refugees are now held captive by their pride
For blessings often turn to curses when we start to lose
faith in deeper things and our ability to choose

Counseled by our prophet that the time is getting near
when in travail the earth shall groan as Jesus Christ appears
Yet still we close our eyes and blame our leaders, not ourselves
Expecting someone else to put the food upon our shelves

Babylon is falling and with Zion set to rise
a seperation's taking place as many lose their lives
Just as ancient Saduccees threw ashes on their faces
some will persecute while others stand in holy places

The suffering of innocents who died in fozen camps
a sacrifice for virgins who forgot to fill their lamps
Examples set for others and the lessons that we teach
put eternal knowledge and perspective into reach

While opposition reigns and Mormon rumors still abound
The spirits of our ancestors that cry out from the ground
will someday be exhalted and in glory reunite
for staying true and faithful in the never ending fight

against the evil forces necessary for our good
So we can be accountable for doing what we should
Perpetual duality will lead to awesome growth
for those who aren't afraid to take upon themselves an oath

developing a nature through repentance and desire
that someday we are promised will protect us from the fire
sent to purge the earth of sin and powers of the Devil
for only through this process can we reach a higher level

With study, prayer and practice one can gain a perfect knowledge
something not obtained by simply graduating college
A formula of faith divine that makes me want to hollar
Just because you googled it does not make you a scholar

Author notes

I wrote this in response to many questions people ask me about the LDS religion. A lot of misinformation, often perpetuated by former Mormons, confuses people who don't do their homework...including other Mormons. I myself have been in that curious category of LDS folks who listened to anti-Mormon retoric and almost lost that which is most precious to me. The ultimate message is that we are all eternal siblings who share a common Father. We fought together for the opportunity to gain a body and if you are here reading this then we were on the same team. Before falling victim to prejudice remember that we are all fighting the same battle. I painted this picture of an 18th battalion soldier with the American flag two years ago.

Please tell me what you think

You have a wonderful way with words. Another great piece of poetry from your depths. Although the last stanza seems like you might have rushed to end the poem or were just trying to end it. Because I know that you have alot mroe to say maybe that is why i feel that way! I might not be an active member but I still battle redicule from others about my faith and choice in religion. I almost got into it with someone on sunday about it while out to lunch. But it was neither the time or place to discuss those issues that were brought up. You are alot stronger in faith then I am and it shows with all your religious poems. And by the way I'm starting to think MAYBE paligomy wasn't such a bad idea! GOD knows I'd love to be a sister wife right about now. hehehe good job. oh and I'd applaud you but I have none left and I don'thave much points to spend since I'm having a contest but If I could I would

I have to say I really enjoyed reading this great informational poem. I also agree that we are on the same team. everyone should have the right to believe in whatever it is they choose to believe in, but should not make any one feel ashamed of what they believe in while doing so. keep writing because i love the way your words speak the truth. your poetryfriend maryann22

Opposition is prevalent when one chooses non-conformity, which in effect, the Mormons did. In the beginning, at least, the Mormons were a counter-movement, beginning as many branches of Christianity had. They found a safe-haven in the West, or so they had thought. Today they are scorned when they arrive at one's doorstep to deliver a message they hold in their hearts as a true one, a good one. Modern-day peoples are scornful of such acts I think. The "every man for himself" attitude is what this country is really based on. It's no wonder the Mormons were persecuted. I admire anyone who stands up in the face of ignorance and speaks out. To construct a poem that educates and inspires at once is nothing short of heroic.

Well your muse is on a roll~ So pleased to see yet another write Love when that happens.

I believe everyone has the freedom to thier beliefs, but I too believe that there has to be a mutual respect for everyone's individual freedom to believe. You are right, Most of us are on the same "team". Confusion and the unknowing spark fear and defense mechanisms...which equal...ignorance. We can only hope as time goes by people realize they do have the write to believe as they wish, but must be respectful for that which someone else believes too. This was kind of rambling but Missy...you wrote a thought provoking piece ~Tia
