Speaking Pictures

I watched her draw her pictures
on the paper with ink and pen.
Water color, markers, crayon, pencil
She used them all she could.
Her family in one picture,
her home in another,
the school yard was her favorite
she told me in a nod.
Never did she speak a word
though I knew everything she said.
Her pictures told a story
one she didn't think I could read
But her farther from her family
told me fear was there.
The darkened window of her home
told me something’s wrong
and the only place
she was drawn smiling
was at school with her mates.
The teachers asked of the bruises
and grew sick of all her lies
they called child services
which is what brings me here today.
Not a word has she spoken
since they brought her in.
And when I asked her to draw her now
she drew a heart
and a building labeled safe
then her waving from a window
with a pencil in her hand.
She spoke her first word after word
'Thank you' all she said.
But its those times I know
I'm doing right
because art therapy speaks
for those who can't

This is another inspiring write from you...well done! Loved what you did here, I am an artist and so enjoy the power of creating! I read your author page and am proud of the progress that you have made, the revelations you have come to! It warms my heart that you do not define your happiness around the involvement of other people in your life - it truly sounds like you have had some serious soul searching!

I've never been to an art therapist but I know I hated having a therapist when I was younger. I think its cool how they helped her but I know my therapist never helped me.

Very lovely poem. I loved how you were so honest and showed art as something that goes beyond words and is a voice for those who cannot speak themselves. I can definitely relate to that concept personally. Though I never did go to a therapist, I used art to heal myself when I couldn't talk to others.

I loved your last 3 lines, it really brought the point home. Thanks for this entry and best of luck in my contest.
