Preview on poem, "Brutality"

Mahatma Ghandi once said that the morality of a civilization can be judged by the way that it treats the animals. In my poem, "Brutality", this is what I experienced first hand. I believe that the way a society treats those that are dependent upon whoever is in power or authority, is a direct measurement of that culture's moral/ethical consciousness.  History displays that the first to suffer when a civilization is in decline are the weakest and the innocent. The Greek and Roman empires are examples of this deterioration. I am appalled by the signs of disregard for the weak and the innocent that is happening in my own country, the United States of America. Children are starving and not receiving adequate health care. The elderly are suffering horribly in the worsening conditions of nursing homes due to inadequate funding. Animals are being treated and slaughtered inhumanely on a daily basis because of factory farming. The main question that I ask myself is... why can't it be stopped? This endless spiral downward into destruction...
