Sparkles in the night,
Little lights to guide us.
Hell's bright heralds,
showing us the path.
Shrieking banshees wail,
As the shells seek us out.
Thunder where no clouds gather,
rain where none should fall.
Huddled like mice,
packed like sardines.
Ignoring the screams,
Hoping they are not yours.
A round hits it's mark,
We are bathed in crimson rain.
We gag and splutter,
Mouth full of good friends.
This is madness made flesh,
This is a nightmare taken form.
No Man can survive this hell,
This perdition of our own making.
All the while they buzz,
Those pretty fireflies.
A pattern overhead,
Hypnotic and strangely beutiful.
Till we go over the top,
Surrounded by the swarm.
So very pretty,
So many sparkles.
One lands on my jacket,
Burning a perfect hole.
Then the five rounds strike,
Following the tracer.

Very poignant and moving. . Thanks and good luck

this certainly shows a very harsh side of war, it feels like something "from the trenches" and it really moved me, best of luck in the contest

Oh My God
This was absolutely incredible, man! I've missed reading your shit. There's so much here that I love. . . probably one of the best poems I have read in a while. It also fits creepily in with the song I am listening to right now, "Scrapyard" by Skinny Puppy.
Applause.

cool!
I really liked the sarkness in this mixed with the beautiful vision of fireflies and then the dark again at the end...This is great because I would HAVE to have some beauty in the darkness
Wonderful!
