Just Maggie And Me

Missing image
Maggie, how strange it seems to be sitting right here,
Thirty odd years on, and it's like nothing has changed.
Back in those days we had such a passion for life.
We were so crazy, some would say quite deranged.

Two giggling girls chasing excitement and dreams,
Precious memories, tell me do you remember when
Our only concern was music, boy's, fashion and fun.
Listening to sixties hits, pictures of matchstick men.

She makes me laugh, she makes me cry
With a twinkle of her eye

Our fashion sense was despicable so out of control,
But I just loved your tangerine stiletto heeled shoes.
I wore a purple and pink flimsy patterned tent dress,
Tank tops were fabulous, stripy red, yellow and blue.

I smuggled make up out. so as my dad wouldn't see,
Stood using the telephone box mirror applying it thick.
Soft pastel peach lips and black Dusty Springfield eyes,
I thought I looked just adorable, and so sexy and slick.

We walk here, we walk there
People stop, and people stare

All the boys in Casa Grande would whistle and shout,
While we swaggered along like top movie star queens.
Red transistor radio playing out Luxembourg top tunes,
Remember the lemon pipers, and my green tambourine.

Sometimes I wish that I could stop and rewind the tape,
Jump back for a night just to feel and relive that time.
But here we are now, reminiscing in this unfamiliar bar,
Grateful for the happy memories that brought us this far.

She flies like a bird oh me oh my
I see her sigh.

The years pass so quickly as we grow older with time,
Though the memories we share will live on to the end.
We both have our families and different lives of our own,
But I'll always remember you Maggie, my teenage friend.

Now I know, I can't let Maggie go

Author notes

I must be getting to be an old softie in my old age, I cried all the way through writing this lol--for my old buddy Maggie who I've just got in touch with after thirty odd years---wow are we really that old lol.
Casa Grande is the name for the area where we spent our teenage years.
I incorporated a song from that time---*Can't let Maggie go by Honeybus*
This one is for you Maggie xxxxx

Wow...This was just like flicking through pages of me and my best friend Natalie's years. We have been best friends for 20 of those, though we never lost contact. We are two different people now and not as wild as we use to be but we'll always be best friends. This really has given me a feeling of contentment. A wonderful read.

Good luck and thank you for entering.

Thank you for your lovely comments, and I'm glad you could find some contentment in my poem. True friends are hard to come by, look after them and keep them close at heart. No matter how far the distance true friends will always return. Mine did.

I love the bit about the phonebox cos i can remeber my mum telling me and my sis about the time you both plastered blue eyeshadow on each other that you had just bought from woolies and screwing big gold hoop earings into your ears before setting off towards longley school only to be caught looking like that by my nannan and grandad...i do believe my mum got sent straight home lol!
thanks for writing this poem i shall keep it forever oh and its nice to be able to put a face to the name xx

Ahhhh I have my friend from kidnergarten,
and I still remember the next year when she did not get off the bus and she moved, I begged and begged the principle to find out where she went, I was so hysterical lol.. they called her parents.. and we ended up having a play date..
sigh I remeber that priceless memory as if it was today not well close to forty years later.
Thanks for sharing, May you and Maggie have a wonderful friendship.

This is one thing I am very invious of. We moved around so mush when I was growing up, I swear I went to 9 different schools from K-12th. Spent most of the time tring to get use to a new place and ooops it was time to go. I know that long friendships do happen cause both of my daughters ( who are in their 30's) have frinds they have had for over 20yrs. Beautiful piece, it must have been inspiration for the other piece.

This write really captured me. not in the way that most works of art on this site do, but it was amazing. i am very young...and have to admit i haven't the slightest clue about the sixties. but this had really nice imagery. i was reading, picturing you and your friend with the fun clothes and make up. (p.s. teenagers still sneak out make-up)
