What Do I Really Know

What do I really know
Of a thought, a dream, my spirit or soul?
The sun that warms my days
And ignites the fires or lights my way

Of waters that quench my thirst
And deeper meaning that formed from birth
Or the air that moves in space
The breath that formed the human race

The earth that shapes my very form
The living, breathing, sentient, born
The Power that flows through all
Seen and unseen and is not recalled

The events that affect my life
People I meet, the passing of time
Of spirits or angels or a magical ride
The depths of my soul or the loves of my life

The reality that settles in
When I see what is there and not just my whims
To know what it really means
To look at myself and not just what seems

Please tell me what you think

What do any of us know? This poem although questioning, speaks to me in volumes of how life is precious, as is time and the third stanza is so true. The people we meet shaping our lives, how from beginning to end of one's life we are constantly learning new things about ourselves and the world we live in. A great poem. Julie.

"The only thing I know is that I know nothing." I think about that a lot. I love your last two lines.

"ihatebroccoli" You gotta love a pen name like that. I think you're on the right path. It's in the 'nothing' that you'll find everything. Paradoxical? Yes. But true. Thank you for you're comment.

One who thinks that he knows, does not know. The proportion of unknown to the known is very large. What we know is still the surface, the core of which lies beyond our comprehension. This applies to external aswell as internal universe. To question one self about what one knows is the begining of wisdom. This is truly a remarkable wite. Thanks for sharing..Venu

This comment, I would say is the literal translation to the poem. Very well put. Peace and blessings. Alberto

    great

I like this poem. It's simple but vivid. It explores a single question in a provoking way. I especially like how you end it. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for that comment. A recognized philosopher once wrote, "Know thyself." So this poem is a comment on that theme.

Prudence, you are so right. Life has its' facades. To see through them to the essence is what gives true freedom.

Never a dream to look deep within ourselves. To find the answers we all need. Searching for something better is what we all try, but the truth lies within us! Great job. Love it! ~Sie
