I once knew a man of dark shadows
An' the way he was inclined
To climb into his mind of madness
Where the white demon dwelled inside.
He was cursed with a life of indifference
And the way that he coped
Was to use up all hope of redemption
And the dope claimed his soul without mention.
All the world takes a high moral stand
When it's those others who are so out of hand
Yes! we try, judge and condemn them
To a life of exemption and why I'll never understand.
Where is mercy and the patience to care
If it's not our children then all must beware
Fortune shines on the just
It's a case of we must because the rest are not really there.
I once knew a man of dark reason
And his way to redemption
Was to get stoned his intention
Yet I had no choice but to let him slip by.
We had no choice but to let him slip by
To this day I will never know why...
