Memoirs of a PocketKnife

I will always treasure
the memories of Dad's pocketknife
I'll keep them with me always
and the pocketknife for life.

There were sermons in the church
on the balcony where we always sat.
Dad cleaning his manicured nails,
while nodding to this and that.

There were boxes to be opened,
not just on Christmas Day,
but packages or letters or
any tape that wanted to stay.

That knife was always sharp
and never disappointed him.
He kept it in mint-condition.
Like himself with daily trips to the gym.

When my Dad left this Earth
my Mom asked what I wanted
Was there something dear to me
All my life,my eyes,for that knife,had hunted.

I will touch it now sometimes
and my heart will just glow.
My eyes may tear up
but I feel my Dad from here below.

He can see that pocketknife,
in its leather sheath,
With his daughter missing him dearly,
and love surrounding it like a wreath.

Dad, you always said every real man
carries a pocketknife on hand
so that when he needs to help
he won't be stuck just to stand.

I listened to your words and
took them to my heart
I understood the real meaning
and I'll never let it part.

It's not about the knife at all.
It's about duty and helping ones in need.
I live by your words,
I'll be the first to jump in and do a good deed.

So thank you Dad - you were the greatest!
and everyday you are missed!
But everyday I hold that knife,
And through it - you are kissed.

I miss you Dad!

What a super poem. I too have my dad's pocket knife. Little scratches on it, a tiny chip missing near the top.

Your poem brings back such great memories.

This is just a perfect poem in all ways!
