Dressed in pale yellow
rather than bride white
trying on a fifth marriage
for size,
praying
that like Lincoln
not being elected four times
didn't keep him from becoming president.
Remembering
she's had her own Lincoln Douglas debate
when deciding to be married
anyway
against odds that no down and out Vegas gambler would take.
Lincoln went bankrupt
taking him fifteen years
to pay off the debt,
she was just trying not to hold
her husband accountable
for debts
acquired by others.
She hoped that she'd do better than Lincoln
who lost the wife he loved
and lost love with the wife he married
and she could manage to enjoy the play, anyway
even if death came later to the marriage.
Lincoln said, "let us strive on to finish the work we are in;
to bind up the nation's wounds.... " and she said a little prayer
that God would let her finish this work
unto death do them part
and bind up her wounds.
