Coyote’s Bitter-Sweet Lessons of Life (Metered Mirror Rhyme)

Missing image

Coyote, teach me wisdom wrapped in smile
Please show me all the pitfalls on my Path
Illusionist and trickster of much style
Your hidden games provoke much grief and wrath

To learn your painful lessons is my task
While dark clouds of betrayal cross my sky
You hide yourself behind intriguing mask
Misleading me, your poison you apply

For once I have betrayed another’s trust
When egoistic gains have been my goal
A victim of sheer greed, desire and lust
I was no master of my blinded soul

I recognize that trust shan’t be abused
And realize how confidence is earned
Ashamed how often friendship I misused
Coyote’s bitter lessons I have learned

While hostile substances my lungs infect
My system does not fight those enemies
Immune defences do not much react
Believing in fake friendship – much at ease

Intoxicated are my lungs and soul
With thoughts and actions dwelling in my past
The karmic fruits will never miss their goal
Fate’s boomerang returns to me at last

Dramatic may this situation seem
While teachings it contains in multitude
Awakening from self-deceiving dream
I take Coyote’s gift with gratitude

    Your companion pieces

to the fool do a great job of filling in the missing pieces. The more I read of you the more I choose to sponge, and just let it seep in. I know the quality of your work. I know its depth and I'm just starting to fathom the poetess.

Beautiful and excellently executed use of this form. Excellent rhyme and meter. Very enjoyable read, both sides of the mirror. Much appreciated information in Author's notes.

Wisdom and understanding may arise from difficult and bitter experience, when combined with willingness to openly percieve the connection between choice and results. It allows us to make better choices in future, and to share knowledge gained with others.

The internal issues of trust, betrayal, selfishness and sacrifice affect our interior microcosms as well as external relationships. Failure to recognize subtle enemy from true friend affects our body and spirit on so many levels.
The past can be an anchor limiting progress, or a stone from which the press of foot can launch us in a new direction.
Excellent "karmic fruits will never miss their goal/Fate's boomerang returns to me at last." Some things "come home to roost," but we can choose to become something better than we were when we released that boomerang into our future.
Much to contemplate in this write!

      dear mirthryl,
thank you so much for this enlightening and in-depth comment on my humble poem ... I highly cherish your patience to have read this verse with attention and sufficient receptivity in order to intuitively grasp the in-between-the-words-message it contains ... you have even gone further than that, in scanning the poetic puzzle for missing pieces and have offered those pieces through insightful words of wisdom that now make my poem and learning complete ... (if it can ever be complete ...)

I haven't expected to receive any guidance from a kindred soul who is willing to tune into my energies and to gently release those remaining knots of ignorance in such a way ...

I'm forever grateful to you, my soul-friend ... and angel ...

(and to blue rew, in case it's her who sent you my way )

  • I enjoyed

your journey, as I myself have traveled on similiar journeys. My totem is the Grizzly Bear, and his lessons are plentiful and full of strife to be sure, which is why I needed such a strong totem. Kind of a paradox. Your mirrored iambic pentameter is unusual and the first I've seen this form. I may try my hand at it sometime.

    Write on and Blessed Be~

thank you so much for your kind visit, dragonblue ... it seems as if all those animal guides are coming my way to teach me lessons, even if they're not my proper totems ... they stay a while and leave when I've integrated their gifts ... I just love them ...

  • i like the story this takes you on. i like how karma plays a part in the lessons, and i like how even though the tings dished out are tough you have the sence of learning and of trust and need for the joking trixter who mixes up your life to make it all crazy, but then some how we all come out in the wash and that seams to be the way of things. i am glad that i got introduced to you through the featured poems. thank you for the read

Seems a difficult form to master, yet this piece does it well. A reader senses depths of introspection and crafty intent not going unpunished in Karma.

    Bravo!

Terrific work in form and wisdom!
I have met this teacher before too, and was decieved.
"Believing in fake friendship – much at ease
Immune defences do not much react"
But then the deceits multiply like viruses and the whole organism suffers.
Your synthesis of experience and lore is beautiful and edifying. Well done, dear Marion!

yay, thank you for your line, margaret
thoughts create subtle germs in our magnetic energy field, infecting us on a subtle and less subtle way with the effects of our own creations ... the great sages and saints have already known this millenaires ago, and one day, this truth shall be confirmed by modern science ...
