Plain Jane Needs A New Bathing Suit

Winters break ---
the warm crawls back across the shore.
The chance to balance on her bare feet,
breathe deep and run through the morn.
Roll up on the balls of her feet,
the water rimmed with foam tangles in the prints.
Flow out in the arc of the run
let the sand absorb the shock.
Away in the last shadows of the night,
the dark pulled aside by the first rays of the day.
Body in full flight
scatters swirls of gulls.
Sun creaks over the waves
her legs scatter shadows across the sand.
She takes her run before the town awakes.
The ocean breathes free the sand is trackless.
Her path on the edge of the waves last trace of race
leaves her impressions erased by water’s spreading hand.
Her run sings in her legs, the rhythm syncopated by the break.
Winter’s hibernation ended by this celebration of pace.
She absorbs the salt air into her lungs.
As she comes home, she halts,
leans forward, hands on knees,
sees the shattered seams
of the last of her bikini.
Laughs into the day.

We all need changes and this is so very good...Running on the beach early in the morning is the most wonderful thing to do before life around you wakes thank you so much for sharing this memory I need this!

This is a metaphor. The joy we feel with a chance to live fully after being restrained is far greater then the embarassment of not always being able to maintain social conventions.
      Glad it touched your joy.
      Love, Tom B.

What a joyful spirit she has..running head long into freedom after casting aside what winter had withered..pretty good universal metaphor here..this winter could represent something personal fro just about anyone, I suppose. I've cast off a few winters in my time, lol..
    LOve, Luna

I never saw this response to this plain jane poem. You know it was because of your poem about running on the beach. Glad you liked this. It is more of my humor than most would realize. As you may have noticed there have been a number of Plain Jane's since.

Good Morning!!!!! I am off to work. See what the day brings.
Have a great day. Let your heart sing.

      Love, Tom B.

It seems Jane isn't quite so plain after all, ehhh, Poet??? Very descriptive, Tom...I chuckled at the end of it, too; apparently, she was immersed in her running & didn't notice the fray... Well done, my Friend... Wanda

I use "Plain Jane" for the just that reason. To change the focus and talk about beauty in another frame of reference. Actually in my imagination she is radiant. Just not so you would notice at first. Beauty is never, for me, about the physical; it is about the internal glow. Glad you caught the ending. I was beginnning to wonder is I was to subtle.

That is a wonderful thought. Time will tell if there is a books worth. Definitely a chapter. These are an exploration that I am still discovering what it is all about. So, time shall tell.
Thanks for all of your support. Love, Tom B.

As you know, I write best when I write to someone or about someone. I am at my best with a personal connection. Plain Jane was created to allow me to have a woman, who will become visible through the words. So I can write to and about her. Perhaps Jungian archtype or personal icon, I am not sure. I am sure that a few more poems will give me a greater sense of definition. Love, Tom B.

Tom I loved this for so many reasons. I am sure you know what they all are , but one of them is that it seems to be such a re-affirmation of "be proud of what and whom you are" I am in a rush , therefore no ellaborate comment, but sending love and applause

I am envious of the show and tell here, especially smiling wistfuly at "body in full flight" and "her run sings in her legs," This is all syncopated motion and joy winging in the moment. The warmth pulses with each scattered shadow.

just another way to greet the beginning of spring. It started with the title. The rest was just the image of a runner along the ocean. It was a lark and I needed one. Thanks for sharing your joy. Love, Tom B.

Joy in the freedom of being who she is and not afraid of it all, actually enjoys just being, where ever that may take her. Always starting the day with a smile and
takes what comes in her stride, the vision of adventure just beginning Love, C

The greatest gift is often just being comfortable with yourself. Letting yourself be available for all that life offers and singing with the joy of the moment. Love, Tom B.

Missed the first of this what appears to be an ongoing series of Plain Jane poems. Your writing has taken another turn. Vivid visuals in these lines - wonder who this is about. You have me curious now.

These are a different kind of poem from my usual writes. Maybe it has to do with it being about Plain Jane, maybe it is just these represent another vision I need to spend more time with. Don't know. Don't care. I just write. Erato is in control.
      Love, Tom B.
