A Faery Tale

Amongst the emerald blades of grass
Robed in dew, like mirrored glass
Catching rays of sunlit gold
Dancing as the dawn unfolds-
There is a glen of shady trees
Which sing in whispers with the breeze
And shelter things you've never seen
Except in children's bedtime dreams

Beneath these trees of jade and brown
There lies a tiny faery town
Cast about as wildflowers
Drenched in springtime's sweetened showers
Unbeknownst to human eyes
Draped in butterfly's disguise
Except that one should magic trust
Then faery songs on wind should gust

Come, my child, sit a spell
Close your eyes and listen well
If you believe with all your heart
Then mystic knowledge, they'll impart
Think on this, oh little one
Before the notion you should shun
If you cannot hear the falling mist
Why cannot faeries yet exist?

An elephant can speak, you know
But his voice is very, very low
Much too low to be heard by us
Who knows what elephants discuss
Let's ponder dogs and whistles here
Dogs can hear them loud and clear
But when we blow, no sound we catch
And some of us, our heads we scratch

So if there's things we cannot hear
With our basic, human ear
Then can't there be some real things
We cannot see- like faery wings?
How sad it seems, when children know
That faeries fly and life bestow
But when we age, those thoughts we fling
We think we know most everything

So sit, my child, listen well
To the saddest story I can tell
About the day the humans spurned
The magic of the earth they burned

Long ago, in olden days
This was a glade where deer would graze
Along with unicorns and such
And humans dwelt in yonder hutch
A man, his wife, their tiny son
They saw the day such was undone
They saw the changing tides of war
When now became the then of yore

A king rose up a castle far
Battle came, the earth to marr
This ruler claimed that nature must
Be conquered and controlled by us
He said the wilds must be tamed
At least, that's what this human claimed
Then the earth was forced to serve
And humans ruled with iron verve

Yes, once the humans lived in peace
With nature, bird, and plant, and beast
But trust soon turned to greed and lust
And those who disagreed were thrust
Away from man, who closed their eyes
No longer saw behind disguise
And magic held such little sway
And mystic creatures ran away

But though the humans think it's gone
Nature's magic lingers on
Gnomes still dwell in wooded groves
And mermaids splash in rocky coves
Unicorns still prance the earth
And pixies prank and tease in mirth
The gryphon flies through starry skies
And faeries wink behind disguise

The man, his wife, their tiny son
Who saw the day such was undone
Lingered on, in tears, refused
To join the ones who earth abused
When man forgot the grim details
Storytellers wove faerytales
Attemps to tell the human race
Of nature's spell and nature's face

And amongst the emerald blades of grass
Robed in dew, like mirrored glass
Catching rays of sunlit gold
Dancing as the dawn unfolds-
There is a glen of shady trees
Which sing in whispers with the breeze
And shelter things you've never seen
Except in children's bedtime dreams

I didn't mention--the last and the first stanzas are my favorite. I love your imagery..."sunlit gold," "sing in whispers with the breeze," fabulous. Still loving it!

I love it! Just...lovely! I'd like to offer constructive criticism, but I just can't! Except--line 42--sadest should be saddest?
This is one of my favorite poems that you've written...perfection!

I do beleive in fairies, i do, i do!

Rofl! A most marvelous effort and a most enticing result. You managed to tell your story very well, with a rhythm and rhyme that remained pleasingly steady throughout. There were a few places where i think a re-read would do the poem well, and some fine tuning that would improve the peice overall. Apart from these few complaints though, it was a most wonderfully told story! You did not, as some people do, shy away from writing a poem of this length, and i give you full credit for such wonderful work!

I thank you most whole heartedly for taking the time to enter my contest, and for sharing such a delightful work of art!
